Kessel's contract expires at the end of next season so he isn't locked in for a solid number of years.

If the cap were to stay at 70, I'd agree. I wouldn't have given him more than 4.25 considering his injury history and the state of that team. 4.5 would be my absolute max, but time will tell if this was a risk worth taking.

It depends on how well he continues to do. If his a 70 point player then great deal. If not then no.

Leafs best winger outside of Kessel. Had to keep him.

Decent risk/reward contract. Not a home run, but fair-ish.

Lupul is my favorite Leaf but this is a bad signing. 5.25 is way too much, greatly reduces his trade value if we ever need too. I'm guessing he's the future "C"

I guessed 5 years at 5 mil per, so I almost had it. It's a good deal.

A tad too long IMO given his history of injury/inconsistancy

Hopefully he stays healthy. He's a good top line winger.

Don't like the cap hit at all. Only had 1 good year, and is very inconsistent and injury prone.

Huge risk for the Leafs, with a lot more negative value then positive. He shouldn't have gotten more then 4.5. Of if he wanted the 5.25 then it should have been 1 year, maybe 2.

No reason to rush this deal with a huge UFA class coming and Lupul coming off a career-year. The middle-of-the-lineup players (what you have to sign Lupul as) are going to take a hit in the new CBA, and guys of his calibre (in an average season) should be easier to procure than $5.25m.
How will we ever sign Getzlaf and Perry now ?!

Unless the rules changed in the CBA they cant resign him until the last year of his deal.

I don't like this deal at all. I would much rather a 2-3 year extension with a higher cap hit, but I think Nonis and company know what they're doing a lot more than I do, I trust their decision.

this seems a bit risky, but toronto has plenty of space and it's better than letting him go.

5 years!?!... and a $5.25M cap hit?!? The leafs are again over paying and taking chances on an oft-injured player. This will definitely come back to be a bad deal. I see I'm not alone in this think either. Good luck

Its the only way we can keep players or add FA. We have been so bad for the past 8 yrs. have to overpay somewhat for players. While vancouver always signs players for bargains.

Risky signing for sure but Lupul is one of the better bright spots on the Leafs aside from Kessel, Grabs, Gards, and soon to be Kadri.

He is a born leader, brings good mix of size, skill, physicality, and scoring to our line-up.

Although the terms should have been a little low( say 3 years), I am okay with the signing.

Classic example pf High risk, high reward signing.
