That Lupul and his agent wanted this deal done before many games were played tells me they think last year was a fluke. Plus, he's an even bigger defensive liability than his linemate.

Not a fan. I'd be fine with a 2 year deal @ $5.25, but 5 years? That's a lot to bank on based on 66 games.

Leafs have the capspace. So I don't see a reason why they couldn't pay him an extra 500k. As long as he's healthy it's a decent deal. Right around his market value I'd say. He could have gotten 5.5 in free agency easy.

I am glad Lupul has rebounded. He seems like a really nice guy. I remember how much people sh** on EDM for the Hemsky signing as well. EVERYBODY in the media crapped on that contract.

Since the Lockout:

Hemsky 429gp - 367pts, lupul 441gp-289 pts.

I do understand one point people will make. Maybe Hemsky continues to be injured and Lupul will remain healthy from now on...

This is a bargain based on his last season. Let's see if he continues scoring at that pace, I think he might have a chance.

The length of this contract is what worries me. This contract will start when Lupul is 30 and will take him up to his age 35 season. I like Lupul but five years seems a little much.

Agreed, the Leafs have been so bad at not signing good name players for decades. What's the point of saving that much on cap?

I am sure he would have at the very least got that contract if he was a UFA.

Good signing and term IMO

Get Kessel locked in for 8 years at 6.5 and I'll be happy.

Yea the money I don't care about, it's the term that bothers me a bit.

He had ONE decent year. That doesn't make him an perennial allstar. He's spent more time injured then on the ice. This deal is terrible.

Key word there.

The 67 points that Lupul put up in his career season last year is actually the exact number that Pomilville has averaged over the last 6 seasons.
I'll agree with your point, but there is such a thing as points per game, lol.

I think it is more of a one less thing to worry about // his value is high. Smart move by him, if he repeats last season he could command $6-7 on the open market, instead he takes 5 for 5 and the pressure is off.

I can see why leaf fans were so reluctant to commit so much money to luongo. Would have left them without the ability to sign Lupul to such a rude contract.

Slightly overpaid, but I can live with it. Happy to hear he'll be with us long term. Exactly the type of player we need sticking around. It depends on him staying healthy of course, but I'm confident he can be a consistent 60 point player for us.

I didn't realize Lupul is signed until he's 43 years old.

Who cares about the term. We will have no problem waiving him if he starts sucking. As long as talent isn't leaving from Toronto for nothing, I'm happy.

Realistically... no he couldn't.

Even if he puts up 50 points this year, there's not going to be much money to be spent in the offseason. Lots of teams need to clear cap, and a few substantially bigger UFAs who can't get backdiving deals.

Not to mention is the leader and captain of the Sabres and is one of the most under rated defensive forwards in the game.

A bit too much.

The $5.25 cap hit is good ($1M raise well deserved) but the term is a bit long but not unexpected. Its a risk for the Leafs but you gotta hope it pays off. If he keeps it up $5.25 is a really good price.

Still, very good player and I'm glad he's sticking around.

Lupul's deal ends at 34. Luongo's ends at 43. Big difference wouldn't you say?

Yup. I would, and it isn't a homer call. Lupul looks to be hungry out there; and i have seen a ton of Pominville.....Ill take Lupul on my Fantansy team for the next 5 years. The past doesn't get me point.

risky. but if he performs like we know he can, the cap hit will be pretty reasonable

Whats the rule on compliance buyouts anyways? Is it just two in the length of the cba? Or only 2 in total by next year?
