Lupul re-signs with Toronto 5 years (5.25 average)
A tad overpaid but I guess money well spent in the end, better then spending that money on a goalie with ridiculous retirement contract. Hopefully Lupul can stay healthy and have the same chemistry with Kessel as he did last year.
Good deal, he would've nabbed more than that in free-agency if he played at a 70 point pace this season (which is what I expect from him). Definitely high-risk high-reward though, if he is a point per game player for the Leafs it's an amazing deal, but if he has injury troubles again it could be rough.
Seems like he's too expensive for every GM tastes. You don't see him being moved anywhere do you?
There is a MASSIVE difference between being signed until age 34 and and 43. Your argument is just silly,
Too expensive for every GM because there are only a few places hes willing to go. Priority is FLA.
But back to the age argument. Based on current "trends" and players its much more likely that a guys like luogno plays until hes 43 than it is that Lupul does until he 34.
So people think on the UFA market Lupul would not have gotten as good of a deal?
That's not the point though. Players will almost always be overpaid in UFA. The point of signing players in season before they hit UFA is to get a deal on them. This, isn't really a "deal". It is by no means a massive overpayment, but it is a bit of one (about .5-.75/year).
If Lupul repeates last year, then this could very well be a steal of a contract. However, he hasn't shown that yet and is very injury prone. I personally think giving him ~4.5M over 2 years would have been preferable. He then can get a bigger contract later if he repeats his production. This contract just takes on a lot of risk for an injury prone player coming ff a career year.
There is also a massive difference between a forward and a goalie in career length. There is also a massive difference between a multi-time all-star, Vezina Candidate, Jennings winner, Hart nominee with on eof the best save percentages of all time. And an offensive winger who is injury prone and just came off career highs.
If you want to see a career path similar to Lupuls, see Sergei Samsonov. You want one similar to Luongo, see Brodeur.
- If Lupul is injured somehow, he's on LTIR.
- Lupul put up 1PPG last season. Not 67 points in 82G.
- There ARE other words in our vocabulary other then great or bad.
- If Lupul plays like he did last year, this is a complete STEAL.
- If he regresses and becomes a 50-60p 2nd liner I'd say it's FAIR or 0.5m too much. No big deal.
- If Lupul turns into just a terrible borderline 2/3 forward then yes, this is a pretty damn bad deal. Not that likely though.
Main point, Lupul will always be valuable with the contract either to the team or in trade. You can debate how valuable but certainly not a detriment.
This is good asset management by NONIS at minimum. Potentially a great core leader for this team going forward at a reasonable cap hit.
Risky long term commitment.
Hope it works out for the leafs and I hope that he turns into a Miro satan
Kind of signing. Originally playing for a couple teams, talent is there but finally breaks out. Also sounds like he has matures into a very good team mate and captain material.

ROFL really? Last I check Brodeur has all those awards and some cup rings. Luongo still has no ring playing on the best team in the league the past 2 seasons.
I mean he's so good you guys are trying to unload him to any team that's willing to overpay to go with a kid who has what? 70 Games played in the NHL!?
Decent deal. About what I expected. He's going to be a little old by the end, but it's supposedly more front loaded, and with the salary retention in trades now it wouldn't be too hard to trade him near the end of it. Lets hope it doesn't come to that though, and that he's relatively productive throughout.

Oft injured and certainly not worth 5.+
Based on what current trends? How many 43 year old goalies do you see in the NHL? There's definitely no shortage of 34 year old forwards.
You must know more about his health than the Leafs medical staff. Point is, accidents can happen, and he may very well get injured the future, but there's no reason right now to think that he's limited by his injury history.

You think Lupul is going to sign for 2 years? If that's the term the Leafs offer he probably doesn't get signed. Furthermore he's making 4.25 million this season after a career season. Even if by some chance you do convince him to only sign 2 years in what fantasy world does he only earn a quarter million raise?
I'm so happy with this. Lupul has been nothing but good for the Leafs and is liked by the majority of Leafs fans. I look forward to watching him play for the next 5 years!
