Absolutely. And lest we forget...There's a few options in the league that could supply like quality -- in terms of the actual difference it could make to our club in the here and now -- at a reduced cost: Thinking, one of Elliot/Halak as an example. The apparent glut of goaltending in Ottawa as another...The uncertainty around Dubnyk in Edmonton, and then there's a number of very interesting prospects: Bernier, Tokarski...This to say, in no way shape or form does Toronto "need" Roberto Luongo. And we certainly don't "need" to give our depth away to do it.

Overpaid a bit. But sometimes you have to.

Great signing to lock up one of our best forwards for the next 5 years at a reasonable hit.

Especially in Toronto with our high taxes. Remember the earnings charts?

I hope they are just seeing where his camp's head's at #'s wise first.

He's a good player, but odds are he's not going to maintain his all-star performance from last season.
agreed

if he repeats and stays in the 60+pt range, sure, good value...but I'm skeptical

why did they have to give it to him now? why not wait a bit?

I don't mind the signing - I'm alittle skeptical that we haven't seen enough from Lupul ... but W.E
Nonis keeps rolling!

Overpaid and a little hasty, but probably necessary if you're committing to Phil Kessel's core.

Seriously...why Kulemin gets raked over the coals by default is beyond me. As noted above: Monster on the forecheck, fantastic work ethic, a defensive forward with size, strength and speed...And he potted 30 before his heart broke last season. Time will heal and Kulemin will be back, spoken of as the kind of player you need to win a championship with.

Leafs Nation, a country in need of Haldol.

So because he was a throw in he doesnt deserve a contract like he did? wheres the slap the head emote from hockey.buzz when you need it, nice logic

MLSE should have cleaned house of Burke and everyone he brought in back in the summer. This contract will come back to haunt the Leafs. Lupul is injury prone hasn't had very many good seasons and turns 30 this year. There was no need to rush this deal...unless of course your Joffrey Lupul.

Now i have bigtime concerns going forward with Nonis running the team.
It's not THAT bad of a contract. It's just a $1m raise. Grabovski has just as much potential to burn us.

Fair value based on his performance last year, but there is definitely some risk in this signing .. I good risk though IMO, because he's a player who has helped get the best play our of our best forward in Kessel

If he can produce like he did last year, it's a steal .. But as long as he can keep Kessel going, it'll be worth it

That Anaheim trade might go down as a top 10 trade in Leafs history. 5 if Gardiner can become a norris contender.

Got rid of some underachieving cap hits, for a potential stud for years to come on the blueline, and a 1st line player.

I really think Gardiner will become a beast. And as long as Lupul can put up around 60 points, I'll be happy.

Not after 1 year. With your logic the Leafs will be 30th place for the next decade.

What do they have to pay him if he repeats his performance from last year and is a ppg powerforward?

pretty sure its your logic that would make the leafs 30th place for the next decade. Not retaining your best players is such a great plan....

Why because they're re-signing key components of what they think is their core? how does re-signing arguably the best UFA winger make the team finish last for next decade? It's not like we have a good track record of signing any impact FA so might as well keep the good ones we already have, right? Isnt the point of a GOOD team is to keep the GOOD player? With your logic this team would just be a vicious circle of having good players and then trading them off for spects and picks, waiting the 2-5 years for them to develop just to ship them off for picks and spects again.

Parise and Grabovski are both 50'ish point/season guys and got similar cash, to I guess the gamble is that he is 50-60pts at worst...and in his career he's up and down over that mark with a lot of volitility

A gamble nonetheless, but the value is right if this was Nonis' reasoning

People are forgetting Lupul put up 9g 9a in 28g the season we acquired him. Granted thats not 1 PPG, but thats solid numbers coming off his massive injury situation.

Lupul has always been a talented hockey player. I think the new opportunity here in Toronto has allowed his career to really take off. Length might be a little long, but the cap hit is okay for a very good player.

Back to the +/- 50pt range, which is his bottom it seems (and what his contract value was based on)
