Joffery has size, speed and skill . However, there has always been something missing, whether it be his focus or work ethic. He has been traded several times and that does not happen with players who are 'keepers' . Maybe once , but how many times has Lupul been traded ? More than one or 2.

But so what? If it makes Kessel happy then great right? Well, my issue is that Kessel may or may not even want to play in Toronto . If he does. Great.

But Lupul's contract is a pretty darn hefty cap hit for a guy who can tune out at any given moment . He doesnt exactly have the career history of someone who can consistently deliver.

Im not trying to 'rain' on the Leafs parade. I guess it was better than letting him walk for nothing. But I guess the whole 'rebuilding' schtick just went FLYING out the window.

Leafs commitment apparently isnt to 'youth' signing a winger at 30 to age 35. They are trying to win now.
Lupul is one of the hardest working Leafs. He is a great leader and leads by example on the ice. By all accounts he is a vocal leader who is great in the room.

Lupul has been traded because he actually has VALUE. In the Beauchemin deal, he didn't....Anaheim thought he was damaged goods. However, a player doesn't get traded for Pronger TWICE because he is not a "keeper". Do you think Edmonton and Anaheim brought in Lupul in those deals because he had problems? Its because they saw value in him.

Kessel may or may not want to play in Toronto? Tremendous insight!

He also doesn't have the career history of someone who has been given sufficient chances to consistently deliver. He does now.

As a Leafs fan I'm pretty darn happy with locking up Lupul long term. He is a true warrior and a good leader.

That's a really weird conclusion to make. Who, please tell me, is Lupul keeping from a roster spot? Is there some top line winger that the Leafs have in the system that is knocking down the doors? I'm not aware of one. Being committed to youth, is a dumb strategy, and I don't even think that's what Nonis ever even said. The idea is to commit to THE youth that you have, and if THEY earn an opportunity, then you make room for them. There is no prospect that the Leafs own that is even CLOSE to challenging for Joffrey Lupul's position with the team.

For his work with the Leafs that's a fair deal.
For his overall body of work that deal is laughably bad.

Hopefully he keeps up his high level of play with the Leafs.

He's a pretty good player...and he does have a pedigree. The guy was picked 6th overall...I know it was a long time ago, and HF is not traditionally kind to high picks who do not immediately light it up (hence Kadri being a bust), but maybe this is just simply a case where a player has finally found his niche. Sometimes it happens.

Let's not forget, we'll need skilled veterans on this team to mentor all of the youngsters over the next 3-5 years. Once Komisarek and Orr are off the team:

John-Michael Liles - 32
Jay McClement - 29
Joffrey Lupul - 29
Mikhail Grabovski - 28

But a 2 year term fits our currnt prospect Growth.

Lupul is more injury prone than hemsky.

A 5 year Contract for .25 a year more for a guy who averaged 7P less per season.
Sportsnet/TSn we have a worse contract.

Resigning in a hurry after a career year where he was blessed with top line minutes & offensive zone faceoffs. Nonis's first important move. Seems scared.

Lupul should be worth the money, we'll see if he eventually earns it, but I feel the term is about two years too long.

It's a lot of cash and pretty significant term for a guy that has been pretty inconsistent but the Leafs needed to do this.

When you don't win you have to pay... And even that is often not enough so if good job Nonis on getting it done.

5 years in risky considering his past, good for him getting big money after last year. Funny seeing the reaction from leaf fans considering how much they ripped the hemsky deal

I'd say a pretty solid deal. Definitely no discount but not a blatant overpayment. The real test will be if Lupul has overcome his prior inconsistencies. If he can average 60-70s than this works great for Toronto.

If he continues his play from last season it could be a good signing. Based on his career, it's a massive overpayment.

When you are rebuilding, you still need veteran guys with good leadership for the younger players...

Might be slightly high, but worth it keeping him here. Should help get Kessel signed up too.

Hemsky has scored 237 over the past 5.

Lupul has scored 192 over the past 5.
stats sourced from hockeydb and nhl.com

I thought that it would be much closer than that,
(^this part is opinion and therefore doesn't require a link as I am the source)
