Also, they badly need a guy who can be counted on on big draws. Other than that, I really liked the look of this team.
I think Ott can be that guy. As for Regehr and Leopold hopefully they canshake off the rust quick the team needs six all situations reliable D-pairings..

Eh, Rinaldo getting hurt decreased the chances of anything stupid happening dramatically.

Wow...Vanek pieced together a game we all knew he could, finally.

Hodgson getting rewarded for his efforts was nice.

Glad to see Ott get a goal in his first game as a Sabre, that was nice.

Stafford dropping gloves for Ennis was great, and exactly what we want/need.

It will be very interesting to see how the Sabres carry this into tomorrow.

Wish we could have seen more Grigs. Loved his no-look pass in front of the goal.

G:
Steve Ott - loved this guy today, he was physical, hard working, and effective.
Vanek - He was dogging it in the 1st and then 2nd and 3rd period really brought it. Great game
Hodgson - Looked like the quickest skater out there today. He was creating chances and just looked to be in the best shape. His hustle netted him a goal as well.
Pominville - He was strong at both end of the ice, solid as usual
Stafford - assisted on that second goal with a sweet sauce, then sticking up for Ennis dropping the mitts
Foligno - was bringing energy all game
Sekera
Sulzer

B: 2nd period

U: Refs, for both teams

G - The awesome Philthy PK going 2 for 7 for kills this season
- The pulled pork and boracho beans were great, I surpassed my high expectations
- No whiny female company through the first 2 periods

B - Whiny female companionship for the 3rd with asking what was happening and then snoring too loud

U - The dreaded hangover for a few of the ladies
- The idiotic drop pass entry on the power play...wastes so much time

Hoppe tweeted he wasn't on the bench at one point. Skate issue makes sense. Clearly he should get his skate fixed every game.

The Good -

- Hodgson (Player of the Game imo)
- Vanek's scoring touch
- Winning the final 5 minutes
- Powerplay success
- Some solid hits
- Ott (Goal and Intensity)
- Lucky Breaks (Refs)
- Stafford sticking up for Ennis
- Grigorenko back pass to Ott
- Miller (got sniped on the 2nd goal but overall a solid showing. Nothing too disastrous)
- Foligno's energy/intensity early
- Hecht had a very solid game

The Bad -

- Sloppy Play. Understandable, but still had some rough moments
- Myers puck-handling today was shaky at times
- Myers blowing that 3 on 1
- Regehr

The Ugly -

- Refs. The two Flyer disallowed goals were bad calls.
- Kaleta with Grigorenko
- Majority of the 2nd period
- Vanek's defensive effort

I'd be ok with that if he put up 5 points every game.

But yeah, Lindy just said it on his presser.

Time to start compiling pre-skate fix stats versus post-skate fix stats for every game.

Oh forgot to mention in goods:

The whole team, coaching staff, Darcy, and Pegula coming out to meet the fans, take pictures, sign autographs, and simply mingle as the doors into the arena were opened. Real great to see that kind of thing.

G- Vanek
B- I know we scored and thats what matters, but our PP is terrible. We dont control the puck, and the idiotic throw it around the boards and never win the race to the puck has to go. Awful zone entries, no puck possession, it was a miracle we scored that many times because we shouldnt have.

U- Refs

Vanek: 2g3a is a career high for him IIRC. Loved his game for the most part tonight.

Ott: Ott will be a fan favorite in here by week two if he keeps this up. He was hitting guys, drawing penalties, dropping gloves, running his mouth all game. He even put in the first goal. Nothing bad to say about Ott today.

Stafford: To quote the grinch, his balls grew 3 times this day, dropping the gloves to protect Ennis.

Attitude: Nobody on this team was taking **** from anybody. Every time one of our skill players was even looked at funny, our larger guys were up in their faces giving them something more painful to think about. I love seeing that. That attitude leads to wins.

Finish: That goal by CoHo was the kind of goal we were all begging for last year. A nail in the coffin goal putting it out of the opponants reach, on a perfect opportunity. Last season that puck just sits in the crease until Brytz recovers.

Bad:

Leopold: Ugh he frustrated me. Worst player on the ice.
Reffs: Boned Philly pretty badly today, also had a few terrible calls on us like the diving penalty on ott.
Ruff: Putting Hecht on every freaking line! The dude needs to stay in the bottom six to stay healthy.....come on man!

Ugly:
Hartnell. What a goon.

Intriguing: Foligno - Ennis - Stafford matched up against the Gireux line all game. They seemed to do a good job at it too. Maybe they have better defensive chops then we all thought.
Basically all of this. Vanek is a pretty good player when not playing through all kinds of injuries, and Stafford... I know it's just a one game sample, but he looked like he's matured. He's been in the league for some years now, and yet I've always felt like he couldn't quite fill the shoes (well, skates) he was handed. Like a boy playing with the men. Not anymore. Looks like he finally grew into his jersey. Not just because he dropped the gloves and protected his linemate, but his attitude and posture throughout the game says "not a kid anymore".

And Ott. Instant man crush!

Leo and Regehr looked a bit slow out there. But none of them has played a game for quite some time, right? I'll cut them some slack. Miller did not make me feel secure. It wasn't Miller time.

Sulzer keeps impressing. I wonder if the Canucks would still do that trade.

Overall I think the Sabres made a statement tonight. This is not a group of players that is going to get bullied. They've toughened up, and as long as Ott, or Foligno, or Kaleta, or anyone is on the ice, you better keep your head up. I like it!

G:
-Cody Hodgson
-Foligno and Ott's physical game. Just adding those 2 really can change the whole team's dynamic, I think
-Vanek for the last ~30 minutes of the game
-Pominville in the neutral zone -- he's great at creating takeaways there
-Alex Sulzer. Nothing outstanding, but he looked like a top 6 defender. I'll be very glad to see him prove his play last season with us wasn't just a fluke.

B:
-Our odd-man rushes
-Jordan Leopold -- his ratio of bad/dumb plays to good ones looked roughly 5:1
-Miller's rebound control was a bit spotty
-So was the reffing

U:
-Scott Hartnell >:|

So, from this thread, the most I can gather is that Scott Hartnell is ugly.

Good:
- Hockey's back!
- Vanek with a huge game. He was creating all game long.
- Ott, Foligno, and Kaleta being physical and around the puck constantly.
- The power play looked great.
- Stafford sticking up for Ennis. Loved that.
- There are a lot of players that I could put into this column.

Bad:
- While Grigorenko didn't screw up at all, he needs to do more than just not make mistakes if he's going to stay in Buffalo. 5 more performances like that and he'll be back in Quebec. He's not being put in a situation that he can really succeed in either.
- Scott and Ellis combining for just 6 minutes of ice time today.
- NBC's coverage. Especially Millbury.
- The officials were just way too involved in the game today.

Ugly:
- Sabres hockey at 12:30 then playoff football at 3 and 6:30? Looks like I won't be getting anything done today.

Say wha?

Was it just me or did anyone else think the PP's were pretty damn good. It's not all going to be rainbows and hugs, but when we actually got in the zone and set up, the passing was superb. Which is what you want on a good PP, right?
