He is. It's also his final year as an Oiler (possibly even in the NHL), and Edmonton has very little in the way of future NHLers in the goalie pipeline, especially not in their near future.
The Oilers could absolutely use a capable backup for Dubnyk. Especially one that might last more than a year or two. Bishop would be one of a few excellent options for that role.
You're not wrong.

Hall, Eberle, RNH all got to make mistakes and learn from them.
I think the Oilers just need to grow as a team and having another young goalie like Ben being traded for does nothing good for Dubynk.
Lehner struggle last season in the AHL. Ottawa trades for Bishop and Lehner realizes he is not going to be handed the role of back up and future starter. He matured and became better.
Also, If you have reliable goaltending you can afford to have your young stars go through some growing pains while still winning.
Bishop would push Dubnyk to be better. He'll know if he sucks that Bishop will get the next game. Can the same be said with Danis?
We don't know how a goalie would react to that situation, it could put unnecessary stress on Dubnyk, fear of losing his job. Goalies are a strange breed, you can't predict how they would react.
I just don't see the point in giving up an asset for a backup goalie, even one as good as Bishop.
