Why Blake Smith wasn't at the draft

I do wanna know why he's not there at the draft.
The MLS only took 14 players to the draft for whatever reason. Only the Generation Adidas players and the players who had signed senior contracts were given tickets to the draft. Blake was told that he was going to receive a senior contract while at the MLS combine, but it was never given to him. With that said, by the time he realized he was not being given a ticket to the draft, it was too expensive to fly so he chose to stay home with his friends and family to celebrate. I have no idea why the MLS is so cheap that they would only pay for 14 players to be at their draft. Other players paid their own way, but what a joke!

I think the camp starts too early. Not sure if we're the only team in the MLS that starts this early, but anyway I shouldn't be complaining lol.

I think I saw on Sportsnet that TFC started their training camp yesterday.

Spending the afternoon hanging out with Blake Smith. Gotta think of a good nickname... Drawing a blank right now #terrible #badfriend
Three questions. Try to be honnest eventhough it may be hard lol
1) Did he have an Idea MTL would draft him?
2) Did Blake have any team preferences? (Close to home, or a team he enjoys in the MLS?)
3) Is he a Hockey fan?

sick. Well welcome to our forum, perhaps in a month or less the thread will be stickied so you can find it much easier at the top.

Tell him to learn french, it will be a must to have a basic knowledge in Montreal. Plus he will earn tons of brownie points for trying in front of the reporters

Oh yeah. When you speak French with the journalists, they treat you with a little extra love

I mean come on, Mapp never spoke french and got destroyed all year long in the media. Jeb Brovsky, Andrew Wenger and Zarek Valentin all spoke french with the media and never really got critisized, even after harsh displays (Well, they tried to with the Merci's and Bonjour Tout le monde!). For sure won the media's favor from day one lol

Can't believe the MLS is so cheap... A flight and a hotel night doesn't cost more than $1000 for each player.

That's because they were better overall than Mapp, not because of language

Never said was because of Lanuage. But my point is; If Mapp tried to speak french, or spoke it, would he of have been as heavily critisized by the media as he was?

Probably not and that's the problem. Hypocritical morons. Then we wonder why we always have the softest team.

If your brother as a girlfriend tell him to take French class she will like it. If he doesn't have a girlfriend no need for French class French Canadian girl will take care of him and keep him warm in our harsch winter and he will like it

That awesome moment when Blake Smith's older bro is on these boards.

Welcome !

We hope that Blake is the winger we've been looking for.

So can you guys tell me why Bernier was bashed for his first few games

I'm so sick of language arguments, it's just a ****ing language.

Oh and tell me what language has to do with having a soft team...

Everywhere French and Anglo Bigots. GTFO please.

this is actually one of the first times I've got in to the language debate and I now realize how touchy it is. So lets stop it there

Training Camp today. Great weather for a good AM Practice to get back in to the thick of things. Looking forward to listen to the interviews from a couple of players today, including Blake Smith as it is the first time we will actually hear/see him. Same goes with our Back 3 on defence. Hopefully they're all in good ish shape (Nesta Ferrari and Rivas)

People forget that Mapp had the best cross of all Impact midfielders and it was technically sound with great dip. Only Valentin (before injury) and Camara were almost as good as him. He also has a decent long shot. His issues were bad stamina and bad 1-on-1 skills/creativity. On a low salary, he's a nice sub/injury replacement.

So who asked for a transfer? Haven't heard any news about this recently.

Thank you for the warm welcome...I'm thrilled that Blake is getting to live out his dream of playing professional soccer, and in a community that really seems to embrace soccer...unlike most places in the US.

I've been trying to figure out the best places on the web to follow the Impact, and it seems like this forum has the best knowledge so far...at least that speak English. Obviously being from Texas, we know more Spanish than French.

To answer your questions, Blake had been in contact with Montreal and knew they were very interested in him. He had also heard the same from 4-5 other teams which is why I believe Montreal used their 8th pick on him in stead of their later first round pick. I believe Houston or Kansas City would have taken him before Montreal's second pick. He did not know where he was going to go until his name was called during the draft.

Being close to home would have been nice for his friends and family, but I think for him, Montreal will be a great fit. He loves the European game and is excited to have the chance to play for Marco Schallibaum who coached a few of his friends in Switzerland.

As far as his love for hockey, he did enjoy playing some hockey in the street while we were kids in the mid to late 90's, but being that football is king in Texas, he never really grew to love watching hockey...give him time and I'm sure you can win him over though.

I honestly don't think he's ever had a nickname other than when he was real little everyone called him "wheels" because he was always the fastest player on the field. You guys will have to watch his game and come up with a nice nickname for him.

Looking forward to learning about the team and joining you guys in rooting them on to victory!

Thanks BradtheAg06 for the insight. This thread is usually very active specially during the season.

You can find other websites specific to montreal impact fans, but they're mostly in french. I like it better here though, we have a lot of very knowledgeable members.

Being a multicultural city, Montreal have a lot of soccer fans, however they're not all into Montreal Impact as they prefer to watch european soccer on TV. So you'll see Impact fans are the most passionate of the passionates about soccer.

Are you a fan of FC Dallas? who are you going to cheer for when they meet with IMFC?
