Love this deal. glad to add Lupes to the list of he and JVR, as Leafs on longterm deals.

If JVR grows into his talent, then the trade was an excellent one for the Leafs.

Seems like a high risk/high reward type deal.

though he has 3 - ppg seasons and two lesser seasons.
I was one who did not want to spend 5M.
But a 2 year term fits our currnt prospect Growth.

Lupul is more injury prone than hemsky.
It Surprised me!
5 Years:
278GM 94G 119A .74PPG

56GM 19G 24A 43P

A 5 year Contract for .25 a year more for a guy who averaged 7P less per season.
Sportsnet/TSn we have a worse contract.
Stop trying so hard...Hemsky WAS better than Lupul, he isn't anymore. 5 years is a stupid sample size that obviously doesn't factor into either of the deals you're comparing.

if we want to be a championship caliber team gotta keep the building blocks we do have. Lupul is one of those blocks

I like Joffrey in Toronto. He's had lots of success there and probably will continue to.

If he's healthy for the duration, he'll be a good signing.

The leafs got this contract right.

A little bit of an overpayment, but really, the Leafs had no choice. The wing position is relatively easily replaceable compared to others, IMO, but Toronto doesn't have the luxury of ready-to-play top-line forwards. That said, Leafs fans who mocked the Zajac signing better take a good hard look at the status-quo.

Why? Zajac is clearly a worse contract.

The multiple back surgeries and original surgical site infection another matter entirely, however.

Why is it so hard for leaf fans to see that this deal actually is pretty bad. First, its way to early to give him an extenstion, second, way to many years for an injury prone guy. Guy might of had a solid season last year but you can't just throw him a 5 year deal cause of that, you gotta see if he can keep that up and it would of been much smarter for nonis to wait at least 30 games into the season this year to decide... I really hope im wrong and he stays healthy and productive.

Huh? He's UFA July first. There's 47 games left in his Leaf career under the old contract.

I never comment on signings of other teams when they're announced. The fact is, the vast majority thought Lupul would never re-sign in Toronto. Now he does and it's a terrible contract

The fact is, guys like Lupul and Zajac would have gotten massive deals as UFA's.

His career stats are unimpressive, he's had bad injuries, good complimentary player though.

The term sucks.

Leafs' fans will be asking for his head once Lupul reverses to his usual pattern of inconsistency. Cap hit is too high for what he brings and the contract is a couple years too long. Bad signing overall.

It's not a bad price, it's just too long for a guy who is as inconsistent and injury prone as Lupul.

If he puts up a PPG like he did last season for the the next 5 years, he'll be worth every penny, but that chances of that happening are so slim it's not worth giving him 5 years.

I'm sure the Leafs saved some money by giving Lupul the term he wanted but at 5.25 I don't think they saved enough to give him 5 years. Who knows, time will tell.

Don't know if I'd call a guy that's been over 50 points one time and his career high is 67 points and even managed to get injured in his career year a ''star.'' On a good team he's a second line player.
