I hope for your sake this is meant to be a joke. If you think a 30 year old 4/5 defensman earning 4.2m a year is worth anything close to a top young forward, then
I think you're overstating his value. There's no team in the league that would pay a 1st rounder for him, especially after a few dissapointing seasons in Vancouver. Also, 30 points is hardly indicative of being very talented offensively (44 defenseman had 30 points last year).
44 defencemen ahead = #3 defenceman offensively.
Ballard isn't going to fetch much, but he also likely isn't available this season without overpayment (eg, late first or equivalent value). I think fair market value for Ballard in the Summer (barring an excellent or terrible season) will be around a second round pick.
I wouldn't want Ballard at all. He's an offensive defenseman that's scored 15 points in 126 games as a Canuck. That's brutal. Considering he has two more years at $4.6M, I'd stay far away.
People can say he's a poor fit and isn't being used right all they want, but it's not like Canucks is a harder team to play for than Avs are.

He's not an offensive defenseman. He's an all around defenseman. When he's healthy he's easily good for 100+ hits and 100+ blocks.
Ballard is a bad player with a terrible contract. No thanks.
It's funny so many Canuck fans bash him on their board and say he shouldn't be in the line up and then come here and ask for Ryan O'Reilly in return.
And this is the problem with hfboards-think. Judging a fanbase by looking at crazy fans on either end of the spectrum, and consider the two views to be the view of the fanbase in general.
Canucks won't be dumping Ballard this season unless they're somehow out of the playoffs come deadline - they have no reason to and he's a great 5th defenceman to have on a contending team. Canucks also aren't getting a ridiculous return like ROR for him.
If Avs were after Ballard there is a decent chance Canucks buys him out this summer. They can't go into next year with five defensemen making $4M+ and Ballard is hard to trade, especially if Canucks don't want to swallow some of the salary and cap hit.

Just because you say this doesn't mean it's true. No one really knows whether or not GM's would be interested in him at $4.2 million. Unless you have some inside info?

We'll see what happens, I guess. With the cap going down, underperforming players on big contracts are going to be hard to move.
Toronto couldn't even find a taker for Connolly, who is only signed for four more months with a $70M cap ceiling.

He'd never pass waivers. There's teams he could help that can afford him that can't take the 1/29 chance of signing him. If he's overpaid at a $60M cap, it's not by much.

Ballard has been steadily improving in all aspects of his game. Top 2 on a lot of teams, top 4 on Canucks, and would be a great addition to an optimistic Avalanche team...

to col: Ballard, Ebbett, 4th round pick
to VAN: Landasbog, Paranteau, 1st round pick
Your offer is bad and you should feel bad. You're terribly overrating Ballard considering the Canucks usually run Hamhuis - Bieksa and Edler - Garrison (IIRC), therefore Ballard hasn't even seen much top-4 time and is regularly playing as bottom pairing d-man. And you have the audacity to say he would be "a great addition to an optimistic Avalanche team?" (especially when you're trading garbage for Avalanche's Calder winner Captain and a decent forward?)

I guess as a Canucks fan I might have made the deal a little sweeter for the Canucks, so how about that 4th rounder for the Avs gets turned into a 2nd rounder?! Now the trade looks pretty even...
