I don't get who in their right mind would give up a 2nd round pick or more in a deep draft for a backup to Devan Dubnyk.

For a guy that is going to play 10-12 games?

I'd probably put Foster ahead of Potter on my depth chart, but neither were any good for us.

I do agree with V and Tyler in that it's incredibly unlikely that they're showcasing Potter tonight. I really do think it's as simple as Kreuger's explaination (interview on Oilers site) that Potter has more working knowledge of the Oilers' system and that it would be good to have Fistric watch a game or two first.

Fistric will play soon enough. But he doesn't represent so much of an upgrade over Potter that they can't afford to let him observe a little before putting him in there.

Id trade Hemsky for Derek Dorsett in a heartbeat.
You don't trade a top 6 talent for a guy that has grit for the bottom 6.

If Whitney proves that he is healthy I think the OIlers will resign him. When healthy Whitney is a legit top 2 dman. If he is healthy we have a good chance to take a run at the playoffs.

Ok, i agree but how many years and he might ask for more money which i think they cant afford if they want to keep the fab 5 together ling term. Also, they have to resign Smid as well.

Sorry, I'm sick of losing and if we trade Whitney for picks/prospects, I'll be extremely disappointed in management.

I'd rather he get traded for someone playing in the league right now. We're thin at defensive depth, and there's no way trading Whitney for a prospect/pick helps this team.

Time to make moves that involve the now.

The only way I would trade a healthy Whitney playing well at the deadline is if he flat out says he won't stay or has asked for a massive raise.

His cap hit is already 4 million, and he's been hurt a lot, I can't see him getting a raise at all if he plays solid.

If he wants to stay I think we should keep him if healthy.

The Oilers need Grigerenko for the #2 center position. Trade whatever combo of Gagner, Hemsky, 1st, Whitney.. whatever it takes.

Hall RNH Eberle
Paajarvi Grigerenko Yakupov

I'm not giving up on Paajarvi.

Agreed. I hold onto the pick or use it in a package for someone who can be your starter.

The Sens paid a premium and traded a 2nd rounder for Bishop when Anderson was out. He hasn't shown anything at the NHL level to say he's more than a backup? So, unless we really need a goalie, why would we pay even a 2nd rounder for him?

The easiest answer is I don't think we ever would.

Good god we better not trade for Bouwmeester. Both of Marleau's goals Bouwmeester was nowhere near where he should have been to stop him.

Why would Buffalo trade Grigorenko? Ive never seen a team have center depth just fall into their laps like that before. First the Hogdson deal, then Grigs falling as far as he did. They are set.

Based on what? Potter is the better skater, has a more accurate shot, moved the puck around better and wasn't as much of a pylon, and to top it off he had a physical element to his game that Foster rarely showed. Foster IMO was the worst "NHL" defenseman that I recall being on the team in the last 2-3 years with the exception of Strudwick. By "NHL" I meant a guy that didn't spend most of their time in the AHL ie. Chorney, Plante, etc.

Had a great first period. Couldn't believe the change I saw in that Calgary team after one intermission

Lupul Five years? Did they forget that he was brought in as a throw in to even salary up? At 29 turning 30 this September this isn't a smart move.

I would love if Edm pulled off a Gagner+ for Benn deal. Only way I can see Dallas doing a deal like that is if Benn's contract demands are to rich for them.

If you're not reading 30 Thoughts every week... well shame on you.

So what does that mean in regards to RoR? Don't most assume that he's available? This is nothing at all like Stewart IMO.

The only realistic way I can see the Oilers fulfilling their need for a big, gritty 2nd line center (apart from trading one of the big 4 or the draft), would be to try and acquire another team's 3rd line center and slot him between Hemsky and Yakupov. Obviously that isn't ideal, but there is no way EDM acquires a big, tough, two-way no.2 C like everyone hopes without giving up some serious value.

e.g. Brodziak (MIN), Eller (MTL), etc.
