Or...he spends his prime years continuing to play at a close to ppg pace, continuing to work well with Phil Kessel, and continuing to be a fan favorite. Contract looks just fine to me. But hey, what do we know.

It was a warranted and well deserved signing. Especially after all of these outrageous signings as of late, you think everyone would be used to it by now.

Leafs have yet to pay a player over 6.5 and have iced a somewhat competent team (here's hoping).

They have the cash. Lupul isn't going to slow down any time soon.

I was discussing this earlier today with a friend.
Thought he would get 5 x 5.75

Love the signing, he's been one of the true leaders on this team.

Now to get Kessel to sign.

Not sure why people think this is a bad signing. There are players on second lines earning as much or more. The only thing I question is the timing. It would probably have been more prudent to sign this half way through the season to make sure last year was no fluke and that he can fit in as well under Carlyle.

In 5 years $5.25 million per year will be second line money anyways. Kessel is likelier to resign with Lupul staying. There is no one in Toronto's system anywhere near ready to replace him. You can't hope to replace him with free agents either. Few big names go to Toronto. For people who say he might only amount to a 60 point player, what would be wrong with that? The cut off line for players that got 60 points last year was 58, and that includes a few defenceman. With 30 teams, that means anyone with more than 60 points is likely a top two player on their squad.

I assumed last year was a fluke season for him, let's see if he can have another good season..could work out..could end up being overpayment.

Also, I should add that Lupul adds a lot to the team besides points. He is a leader for that team and comes across exceptionally well in any interview I've seen him in. He really ought to be captain instead of Phaneuf.

lol. This contract will be regretted by later this year and bought out before it's over.

He was a top 5 NHL scorer at the time of his injury. He's currently a first liner.

Saw this one coming...

Lupul had a lot of leverage with this deal. On a better team I think he gets less but the Leafs really can't afford to lose any of the top forward talent they have... which is basically just Kessel and Lupul.

Yeah...Basically just Kessel and Lupul.

No Grabovski, Kulemin, MacArthur, Bozak.

On any team...he's getting 5.25 on the UFA market at worst.

This is a top 10 offense in the league even without a clear #1C.

A little more then I'd want to pay, but at least he's locked up for 5 years.

If he can stay consistent, that'll be great for the leafs.

Zajac is much more valuable overall. Certainly a lot more than 500k.

I don't know how people can say this is a bad contract, Ville freaking Leino got 4.5 mil/year out of us somehow..

People need to understand that players get a lot more money now than they used to, it's just the way it is. From a Buffalo perspective, I'd sure take Lupul for an extra $750k over Leino..

the UFA market is different than a team re-signing their own player...

and yes Kessel and Lupul are the Leafs only top line talent... after that there is a pretty significant drop off.

They won't be a top 10 offense under Carlyle. Which should actually help them improve.

I personally think Lupul will live up to the deal... so long as he remains healthy.

Great deal for Leafs. If Lupul has another ppg year, his price is 6M per ATLEAST.

Nonis is doing awesome this week.

Good deal, some say slight overpayment, certainly not more than 1 million. Were we going to extend him for less than he was currently getting? Leafs plan on building from within so we can't spend near the cap with our own guys for a few years anyway. We did leave enough room for a major young U F A signing. What could be better than that?

Good signing, my favorite leaf player along with gardiner. But I would have waited till he played at least 24 games this season before talking term and money. He had one amazing season, especially the dynamic duo between him and kessel. But still would like to see if that was a seasonal fluke or if he could keep up to last year's production. Still happy we resigned him, great leader and working in the local community. Hope extending kessel will be easier now.

That's the thing, every year the salaries are going up. Lupul has put up terrific numbers for the 2 years since he was traded to Toronto (It's more than just one good year). He was going to get a big salary anywhere he went. The fact is most thought he'd never stay with the Leafs.

There are those that would cry overpaid if he signed for $8 bucks an hour.

I've seen people who laughed and said he'd never re-sign in Toronto (and boy did he sign fast), who now don't mention that they were wrong and now say it's a terrible contract.

The term sucks at this point.. He would have to show me more before committing to five years
