Memphis is an absolute dump. Nothing worth going there for unless you're a huge Elvis fan. Their BBQ is ok, but I'd rather go to Nashville. Looks like he'd most likely drive directly through Memphis, but I wouldn't bother staying overnight there or anything. According to Google maps, if you made a slight detour to Nashville... it would take about 11.5 hours to get to Ole Miss with a stop in Nashville, vs 9 hours if you took the quickest route, that passes through Memphis.

Have a friend who went to grad school at Memphis, and she would drive 20 minutes away from the city just to get groceries, because of all the thugs.

Murray, which games are you going to? I've heard great things about Baton Rouge, even from a guy who hates LSU rival wise. One of the nicer fan bases in the SEC. Have never been myself, though.

Nashville is amazing. Not sure if you'll be 21 then, Murray, but there are tons of bars and great food. Also could get cheap Preds tickets.

A&M and LSU. They're both at Ole Miss. My cousin goes there, so it's a visiting/SEC football trip.

I will be. It'll be in October too, so it's possible.

This is a fact. Nashville is a great weekend trip.

Although tix aren't that cheap anymore. Looked earlier today out of curiosity, cheapest you can get on StubHub for April 6th start at like $65 before the fees and taxes.

So you going to the LSU campus or not? When you say they're both at Ole Miss you make it sound like you're not...

I'm not. Both of them are home games at Ole Miss.

Gotcha, thought you might be when you said SEC tour... well that's too bad, it's supposedly great.

Maybe one day. Part of the reason I'm going is to see my cousin and a friend that goes there too.

She actually went to Ole Miss/UGA this past year and said it was awesome.

I like Memphis. Had to go there twice for fraternity conventions, it was a good time.

Actually, if you're down in Memphis during the baseball season, I strongly suggest you catch a Redbirds ballgame. AutoZone Park might very well be the best minor league stadium, period.

If memory serves, downtown Memphis was decently nice, too.

The thing I've heard about Memphis is that you're in a good area one second and a thuggish area the next. It's not like there are four distinct sides with a couple good and a couple bad. I heard there is just good and bad all over and so bad that a family member of mine used to be taken over the border into Mississippi for food and hotel accommodations to spend the least amount of time in Memphis as possible.

Said family member went there on a business trip and talked about how nice it was. If I ever go to Memphis, I'm seeing the Bulls.

Beale St. and all around that area is nice. You get away from there, yeah, it's pretty dumpy. Graceland is fun once, wouldn't ever go again. But staying around Beale St. for a couple nights is a good time.

I'm looking at it more from a Nashville vs Memphis perspective. I love Nashville.

Well, using that logic, with a Chicago vs Indianapolis perspective, there's no reason to visit Indy. Can still have a good couple days in Indianapolis, though.

Another town being better doesn't mean that a different city doesn't have some worthwhile things about it. Indy's a fun little city for a weekend, and Memphis can be the site of a good day or two as well.

But Chicago and Indy aren't similar in the way that Nashville and Memphis are, so that doesn't really work when you factor in how similar Nashville and Memphis are. Indy and Chicago offer two completely different things as cities, when Nashville and Memphis are built on very similar ideas, if not the same idea.

Fair point, I suppose. Then Chicago and Milwaukee. Essentially same deal. Chicago's clearly better, but can still have a good couple days up there with the cheeseheads.

Need to go back to Nashville now that i'm of age. Clearly better than Memphis, no doubt, but Memphis is still fun for a short trip.

I make at least one trip there a year to see the Hawks. FYI, they play there on a Saturday, April 6th. 2 PM CST game. Although you might not want to go during a game, because you'll think you're in Chicago while there the entire weekend.

I waltzed into the Hawks' morning skate. It was insane. Just walked into the stadium. Couldn't believe the lack of security and what not. Walked in there with five minutes after practice and talked with a few guys. It was cool.

But Ray is right when the Hawks are in town. That place gets invaded.
