First Earl Weaver and now Stan the Man. What a tough day for baseball.

In 1943 Musial had 700 plate appearances. He struck out eighteen times. Amazing.

46 was more impressive, imo.

he missed 45 because he was in the navy. he came back in 46 and put up .365/.434/.587 in 702 pa. 50 doubles, 20 triples.

Truly a legend. The thing I like most about him is that he wasn't involved in any scandal of any sort and was just a great human.

My mom and dad met Musial once. My mom could not tell you what position he played but whenever he was mentioned somewhere she always interjected about how nice he was. That kind of thing carries with you and you could tell Stan had it judging by everyone's opinion of him throughout baseball and the general public.

By contrast, I met Barry Bonds at a signing once. This was back in 1993 or so, thus he was a superstar but not BONDS so to speak. In any event, when my time up in line came to get my baseball autographed I said "Hi Barry, great to meet you, how's it goin'?". Without looking up from the table he said "Man, I'm just lookin' to get out of here".

At least he was honest back then. LOL.

There is a very compelling argument that Musial may be the most underrated pro athlete of all time.

RIP to The Man.

Spent some time reading reactions around the web today at work. Seems like everyone who ever met Musial came away with a fantastic opinion of him and an autograph.

RIP to The Man.

If he doesn't miss 1945, he may have hit the 25 HR's he is missing to reach 500. I think this is a huge factor in how he is viewed, unfortunately. 500 homers puts him in a different conversation.
