Lindy Ruff hockey, if you don't score a goal you get different linemates, I liked what I saw from him when he was with Ott and Hecht though.

Thought he was solid today, nothing spectacular but no big mistakes either. He drew a penalty and had a couple of really nice passes. I really want to see him paired with Ott and Leino once Leino gets over the flu. I think they could definitely provide some secondary scoring.

Since when? I thought he just had a nagging quad injury that was bugging him.

He had a nasty no look between the legs pass right on the tap in the second period that his linemate didn't finish. He has a sick pair of hands. Whether he sticks this year or they wait until next year, the kid has elite skill.

Nice pass, quiet game otherwise but nothing wrong with that from an 18 year in his debut.

Most of the time he played with kaleta was after Ott and Hecht got off a PK. It's not that unsual for lines to be a bit jumbled after special team situations.

Pretty solid debut with expected limited minutes. Some nice passes and decent defensive awareness. Faceoff percentage was 55.6% which is also a plus. Would like to see him on the PP perhaps, but can live with how it's currently set up.

I think this kid is going to turn into a high point producing centre... with Buffalos defensive style and system he could seriously be moulded into a great player. Kid has huge potential I still can't believe 8 teams from 4-11 passed on this guy. Buffalo got the steal of the draft i'm honestly pissed the leafs didn't draft him

I barely notice Yakupov last night in a much bigger role than Grigorenko. I can't see Grigorenko being sent down, too much skill and Buffalo needs him if Hodgson or Ennis go down with an injury.

Grigorenko will actually have to earn his ice time unlike Yakupov who will have his PP time giftwrapped every single game. He will end up being the best player.

It's funny that you say that sarcastically, like you know it's not true. He was better than Yakupov for Russia just a few weeks ago.

Heh, he's obviously not as good as Yakupov 1>12, he's not even as good as Forsberg and Galchenyuk.

Ignore him, guys. He's just trying to start a crapfest.

On a more serious note, Ruff said Grigs role will expand as he gets more games under his belt.

Yakupov was playing with Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky while Grigorenko was playing with Ott and Hecht with no powerplay time. I hope Yakupov looked better or that's just sad.

4th overall vs 210th overall

Grigs is staying, only the jealous haters point to myths like his age being anything other then 18. I'd be mad too if another team was able to draft an elite top 3 prospect to at 12th overall

Nice debut for him. In a tight game, he was not exploited and made some good plays despite not being with his usual linemates from the last week of practice a chunk of the night (Sabres Fan UK, great synopsis of why).

Was he heaving so hard he pulled a muscle? I kid. I'd like to see Leino get back in quickly -- his possession game compliments Grigorenko's ability to find seems and his willingness to shoot.

Wouldn't mind seeing grigorenko get a look on the 2nd powerplay unit. Foligno-Ennis-Stafford didn't do too much with their man advantage chances

Really, that's what you are going to pull, what a poor example, the 4th pick and not the 1st, vs. an amazing drafting team in Detroit who knew about a player who nobody else did, hehe.

What the heck does his age have to do with anything, I don't give a crap about that, he's 18, so what.

Nice try there, if he's so elite why did he fall from #1/2 to #12, obviously he's not as elite as you think, 11 other teams say different.

I guess Zach Parise is garbage and so is Shea Weber, after all quite a few teams thought they weren't worth picking earlier. Erik Karlsson didn't just win a Norris last year after being passed over by 14 teams. Eberle isn't one of the best 2008 drafees after getting passed over by 21 teams. Luke Schenn is clearly better than John Carlson. I'm sure you would also take Erik Johnson over Claude Giroux, right?

What a ******** argument.

Obviously they are good players, the argument is comparing the #1 pick with the rest of the draft, and the fact is that most of the time the #1 pick is the best player in the draft.

Key word is most - which is probably false in itself

And no one here has said Grigorenko is easily better than Yakupov, at best people are saying he is on par with Yakupov which is not a huge stretch at all considering that Yakupov and Grigs were neck and neck in pre-draft rankings for most of last year and Grigs improved play this year

Sadly you're wrong. Which is why I listed Giroux (#22) vs Erik Johnson (#1).

Since 1990:

Owen Nolan vs Jaromir Jagr/Martin Brodeur (wrong)
Eric Lindros vs Scott Niedermayer/Peter Forsberg (wrong)
Roman Hamrlik vs Alexei Yashin/Sergei Gonachar (wrong)
Alexandre Daigle vs Chris Pronger/Paul Kariya/Sauku Koivu (wrong)
Ed Jovanovski vs Mattias Ohlund/Daniel Alfredsson (wrong)
Bryan Berard vs Shane Doan/Jarome Iginla (wrong)
Chris Phillips vs Danny Briere (wrong)
Joe Thornton vs Roberto Luongo/Marian Hossa (right)
Vincent Lecavalier vs Brad Richards (wrong)
Patrik Stefan vs Sedins/Havlat (wrong)
DiPietro vs Heatley/Gaborik/Hartnell (wrong)
Kovalchuk vs Spezza/Hemsky (right)
Nash vs Semin/Ward/Keith (wrong)
Fleury vs Staal/Parise/Perry/Weber (wrong)
Ovechkin vs Malkin (wrong)
Crosby vs Kopitar (right)
Johnson vs Giroux (wrong)
Kane vs Couture (right)
Stamkos vs Karlsson/Eberle (right)
Tavares vs Duchene (right)
Hall vs Seguin/Skinner (wrong)

Too early to tell for 2011 or 2012. So we're looking at 6 cases where #1 was better vs 15 where he wasn't.
