That would only be if there were a lockout. Now, every team that doesn't make the playoffs has an equal chance to win the lottery and get the #1 pick. The 9th place team would have the same chance as the 15th place team.
Isn't it weighted?

Not anymore, unless I'm really out to lunch. I'm fairly certain it's not.
I'm pretty sure it is weighted now. IIRC it's not unlike the NBA draft lottery model.

Can anyone explain to me the benefit in not updating the public on Burns' status? I understand downplaying an injury before a game or playoff series so the opposing team won't try to exploit it, but Burns is already out of the lineup so what the hell does it matter?

Only thing I can think off is a private issue that is not injury related. Problem with coming out and saying that is that then you have a zillion nosy reporters badgering anyone and with everyone with any chance of knowing whats wrong with Burns.
Personally, I wish they would just come out and tell us. From a business (and players privacy) perspective, I can see why they may not want to.

What?! Look, he thinks he's people!
So was anything mentioned in the pre-game regarding Burns, or did they just gloss over it saying he was out for now?
This whole situation just feels strange.
Rusanowsky in the pre-game radio show yesterday said the "Burns injury" was not related to his hernia surgery in May. He said it was a separate "lower-body issue." Baker added no details or comment.
It sounded like it maybe happened in September/October? I saw the photo of Burns in those weird sex pants back in November, but I thought it was from hernia surgery recovery over the summer. [http://www.battleofcali.com/2011/11/...mr-fancy-pants]
Hedican on Chronicle Live/CSN: "The word is on the street that he might not play this year."
If it's really bad, I doubt the Sharks would say anything until a retroactive LTIR announcement.

Can you explain to me the benefit to the organization in updating the public on Burns' status?

No benefit per se, but why not update the people who spend countless hours and dollars supporting their team on the injury status of one of its more important players? (Unless as fistfullofbeer suggested, it's a private matter unrelated to hockey). Why waste the energy covering this up like it's Watergate?

What energy are they wasting? I'm pretty sure not answering questions doesn't take much effort.
If you think this organization is bad you should try the Bruins on for size...I was once "picked off" while walking down a hallway at the DCU Center heading over to a Bruins prospect that was on crutches and was physically prevented by the PR guy in Providence from speaking to the player, who then told me that the player was uninjured despite the fact the player was in clear view 15 feet away, on crutches, and had a cast on his right foot. When I pointed out that I could clearly see the player and he certainly looked injured to me, I was told that was his normal pregame stretching routine.

No, I'm not kidding.
Did you ask him why you weren't allowed to talk to him? Or get closer to him?

With Burns on the shelf I think this team should play the daylights out of the Boyle/Irwin tandem until Demers return. Irwin will gain valuable experience and if the 1st game was any indication of things to come, could be a mainstay. Did Irwin and Braun play together in Woostah?? 210 any insight??

Brent Burns placed on IR to create roster spot for Scott Gomez. #SJSharks
(And still no "public" timeline on getting back into action, nor anything more specific on injury)
