Is each one expected to have a long, healthy career?

If so, Bobby Orr. I really wanted to go with greatest goaltender (Hasek), but Orr was dominant in all three zones.

The guy playing 60mins a game over the guy playing 30 mins a game over the guy playing 20mins a game.

G > D > F

Name 5 skaters off that Buffalo team when Hasek was in his prime and carried them to SCFs. Ya I thought so.

Unlike Hasek, Gretzky and Orr were actually able to make their teams champions and not finalists.

Haha, initially reading this I picked D. As I was thinking greatest Forward bunch, Greatest D bunch and the Greatest G pairing. But since I seemingly have to pick just ONE player, I would probably end up actually going with a goaltender.

Yes, but how much of that 60 minutes will be spent in the defensive zone, 25 minutes? The goalie isn't contributing when the puck is in the offensive zone, so the 60-minute argument is somewhat misleading.

Right, because Hasek and Gretzky played on equally talented teams. Fair comparison.

Gretzky or Hasek.

I'm not sure if Orr would maintain the same level of relative dominance to his peers today.

If you get a full career out of Bobby Orr it's a toss up between him and Gretzky. A healthy Lemieux is also a wildcard. I take Gretzky.

We already had Roy, so I'll take a full career of Bobby Orr.

It depends, if I'm picking from Gretzky vs Orr vs best goalie, I'd take Wayne. If, however, we're assuming the same level of dominance regardless of position (i.e. Gretzky level goalie) I'd take goalie.

Not always.

edit: on a serious note, goalies can contribute offensively. Look at the Dallas Stars with Turco. Their breakout was highly dependent on Turco's puckhandling skills and they often capitalized on line changes.

Can't get anywhere without a good goalie.

You can without a star forward or defenseman.

so you're saying that Niemi was more important to the Hawks than Toews or Keith? Gotcha.

And for that one team that did it with decent goaltending, there is about 90 in the history of the NHL that had hot goaltending.
