I don't understand Gillis...why suddenly break media silence now and say there is a potential deal in place?

I'm guessing he's trying to get other GMs in the hunt worried that Luongo will be traded soon...and so up their offers.

  • San Jose - Maybe. But I dont think Niemi has been that bad
  • Phoenix - Cash strapped, and goaltending is the least of their concerns
  • Dallas - Signed a new contract with Lehtonen
  • Detroit - Howard is an excellent goalie
  • Chicago - Would take massive overpayment
  • Columbus - Maybe
  • Ottawa - Maybe
  • NYI - They already have 3 starting goalies... (Montoya, Nabakov, and DiPietro)...Dont see how a deal could be in place unless DiPietro is coming back the other way
  • Washington - Maybe
  • Tampa - Just traded for Lindback
  • Winnipeg - Just signed Pavelec

Maybe we wake up to a trade announcement tomorrow?

What would be fair trade value for Henrique? Luongo, Schroeder and a 2014 1st, 2013 3rd?

Lindback is really athletic for a massive guy but his technique and angles aren't very good from the little I've seen from him. Still, it would be weird for Yzerman to sign him in the summer and give up on him before seeing him play a game (the interview took place before opening weekend).

I've thought for a while that while Luongo has publicly stated he's willing to waive his no trade clause to accommodate Gillis, he may behind closed doors be demanding a trade to a Florida Team. This would allow Gillis to feign shopping Luongo at market value...but in reality hope that Florida or Tampa Bay makes a good offer.

in what universe is that fair? terrible.... For a guy like Henrique, Schneider, 1st, and Jensen, but even then why would NJ do that?

Detroit should be fine with Howard, luongo wouldn't be that much of an upgrade. Ditto with San Jose. Ottawa's doing fine with Anderson and got Lehner/Bishop coming up. Phoenix would likely wait longer to see if they can get another good season out of Smith. Ditto with Columbus in their situation with Bob/Mason/York. That leaves:
[*]Colorado[*]Chicago[*]NYI[*]Washington[*]Tampa[*]Winnipeg

Out of these, I doubt Colorado would want Luongo not only due to Varlamov, but also because they have tons of up and coming players; having that salary stick around for a long time would be very bad. Ditto with NYI, who also has lots of promising G prospects. They aren't in a win now mode, either. Tampa has tons of bulky contracts tied to underperforming and/or ageing player so they would have lots of difficulty accommodating Luongo's deal.

That leaves Washington, Winnipeg and Chicago as the likelier destinations. Caps have to a certain extent the same problems as the Bolts, although the deals are on better players (I honestly don't see legit upside on Holtby/Neuvirth tho and that's why Washington could be interested). Winnipeg has way too many holes in their roster to be a solid playoff team even with Luongo; unless Chevy decides to go all in they won't even consider Luongo.

And then there's Chicago. They could accommodate Luongo now by dumping Crawford and would fit under the cap later if they got rid of Oduya and Olesz (very likely amnesty buyout targets). They don't have anyone who might ask for a raise until 2015-16, either with the possible exception of Leddy and Bolland - but then again, he could be the guy going the other way.

He's certainly made the point in all of his post-lockout interviews that Luongo has a NTC and that the media often forgets this. It coincides with gollum's rumour regarding Lu blocking a TO trade at the draft.

Edit: Vinny, Luongo is a massive upgrade over Niemi.

Tampa would have been a good destination if Stevie Y hadn't had a moment of enthusiasm or frustration and gone after Lindback. 2 2nds and a 3rd? that's as good as a late first. Way to capital commited to them go after Luongo. Then again it could be something really crazy, Lecavalier. Similarly crazy contracts and they have nmc that would have to be sorted out. I'll just go back to ruling them out, Lecavalier's contract is just impossible to fit unless Tampa eats 30%.

Could the isles be the wild card? They are in NY so Luongo might not mind. They have a player that needs to be dealt with (dipietro) and we have the cash. They could probably spare a centre if forced. They might even consider Ballard.

Edmonton: no, I could see them kicking the tires on Luongo but a trade that close to home isn't happening

Colorado: no, set in goal

San Jose: possible

Phoenix: no, they'll run with Smith again

Detroit: unlikely, Howard is OK and Holland is happy with adequate goaltending. However I wouldn't rule it Holland pulling a surprise

Chicago: low possibility. They need a better goalie, they have some reasonable assets. OTOH both sides hate each other.

Columbus: no, interested but I can't see Luongo waiving

Ottawa: unlikely. Anderson is passable and they have great hopes for Lehner

Washington: no since they will see how things play out for a while, so I can't see them moving until mid feb at the earliest so that would rule them out.

Winnipeg: unlikely. I could see them interested, us dealing with their goalie would be the issue, but I can't see Luongo interested.

Giroux is worth Malkin.

Take that in for a minute.

So you're telling me this whole goalie controversy could actually be coming to a head soon... eh?

If Gillis is referring to Bryzgalov, it could have to wait until the summer when they'd buy him out.

Even for him, he was touchy. It was great, I think I could hear Rintoul cry as he defended his lame questions and prodding.
