Thoughts on the Patrick Kaleta penalty

Yesterday when Kessel knocked down Miller we had a power play until Kaleta decided to jump on Kessel immediately and even it out to a minor penalty to each team. We saw a similar situation with Tootoo where we only received a 1 minute power play after running Miller. While watching the game a bunch of my buddies, who are leafs fans, were celebrating saying Kaleta is a moron and took a dumb penalty. I told them I didn't think it was a dumb penalty. The way Miller fell he couldn't tell if Kessel meant to hit him or not, and he had to act immediately, because if he didnt, the media could go off about this team being soft again, especially with this new "we don't back down to anyone" persona they are starting to show. It sucks we didn't get a power play but its nice Kaleta was able to feed Kessel with 7 or 8 shots in the back of the head

How do you feel about the penalty? Is it time to be a little less sensitive around Miller and take the man advantage in cases like the accidental bump by Kessel? Or do we continue this zero tolerance approach and make sure anyone that comes near him will pay?

Yes.

Notice how after that, nobody went anywhere near Ryan for the rest of the game. I'll gladly trade a 5v4 for a 4v4 and that.

There is not one poster on this board that will call Kaleta's reaction poor. It was exactly the response needed after last season no matter the consequences.

That said, I suppose this is an appropriate thread to point out Miller's incessant flopping and whining in the crease since after the injury last year. Refs aren't going to give him those calls all the time.

agreed and after I submitted the thread I realized 100% of the board will feel the same way after last season

Well there's the problem right there. The key is to watch the game with smart fans who understand the game.

Sylvester and Rayzor nailed it during the commentary, if you have the opportunity to trade Kaleta for Kessel and show the league that liberties with Miller will not be tolerated in the process, you do it 100 out of 100 times.

Love seeing this team playing with more of a gritty edge, making me really look forward to the first Bruins game.

I'm pretty confident in Pommers' PK ability - take the penalty to show we're not messing around and get their star player in the box.

If we had an upcoming power play and Kaleta, say, tripped a leaf then it's different story. In this case, Kaleta's response was the right response. No power play is worth being castrated by the media, fans, and other teams for not reacting. Same with Stafford's fight with Hartnell. If you take liberties with our players then there will be consequences. Period.

It was absolutely the right response and it's refreshing to see this team show some spine.

I thought this thread was for the phantom call at the end of the game that nobody has been able to explain to me yet.

That's what i thought, too. Kaleta was interviewed post game and I heard him saying that he takes full responsibility for the penalty and he's smarter than that and knows better....but I never heard what he is smart enough to know not to do.

He went in and shoved Kadri after the whistle when he was already engaged with Hecht. It was a light shove and a very weak roughing call. If anyone should have got a penalty it was Hecht because he crosschecked Kadri in the face.

It was pretty hard to see anything through the back of that guy's head from the awful ACC camera position.

This. Rely on one's teammates to pick up the PK, jump in and defend one's own. It's contagious and builds camaraderie.

Kaleta did the right thing there. Stafford did the right thing with Hartnell. Take the penalty, show up.

There was a poster in the GDT that was adamant PK should have done nothing about the contact. It was fairly surreal.

If you touch our goalie, in our out of the crease, you'll get worked. That's how it should be. Period.

Oh, man. That guy! Someone should have told him to stay seated until a stoppage of play

This is what I posted in the GDT:

And it usually ends up that those are the types of penalties teams always kill off. Because it psyches you up, and the PKers play with more passion and effort. Take the penalty, and then kill it.

I agree with Kaleta taking that penalty. Though I was really scratching my head in the 3rd period when Kaleta got that misconduct or whatever for some minor roughhousing before the faceoff. Not quite sure what the ref's saw in that.

Sylvester and Peters mentioned that penalty on Kaleta and I was trying to figure out where to comment. I saw this thread and thought is was about the phantom penalty too.

How did I miss it? I re-watched the Toronto feed this morning. Here is what happened:

1st of all Kaleta can't get a break: At the end of that play the puck goes on net. Hecht slashes Lupol, and cross checks him twice on the back. Play stops. Then Kadri skates towards Milller and stops; Hecht crosschecks him three times to the chest/neck area. Small scrum starts; Kaleta comes in pushes Kadri from behind and gets called for roughing.

That's the minor downside of having a major-league agitator rep...you're never going to get the benefit of the doubt. The refs see #36 involved and chuck their arm in the air as fast as possible, just the way it goes.

If you go to TSN.ca they have a video feed on their right side of the page. The first highlights is the TOR BUF game and it shows the play clearly at about 1:05 into the video

This also ties back into the case I made for Hecht. Being a "tough", hard to play against team, makes quality PKers a necessity.

They go hand in hand

Lupol was giving Miller a face full of crotch as he was boxing the puck into the net.

Regardless, you have to let the other team know there will be consequences most every time. (If down by one in a crucial game late in the third, Miller may need to suck it up).

Teams will continue to try to get Ryan off of his game and screw with his focus. He will remain better focused knowing his teammates have his back instead of having to worry about pushing back himself.

Plus, it just shows they are united and playing for eachother.

There's a big difference between backing into the goalie on the edge of the crease and crashing through the crease.
