What I find ironic is that Gillis would go out and slam Toronto because he thinks they're puppeteering the media then he goes out and releases this news, probably to garner interest in his goalie

I think we highly value our goalie prospects, but crazier things have happened.

Right because an NHL GM wouldn't be aware that Luongo is on the market. Derp.

Honestly, I think Gillis' comments are smoke and mirrors meant to create pressure on teams that he has been negotiating with to move more to Vancouver's direction in terms of a package.

He now knows after two games that he has put himself into a really hard position as "it looks" like (or can be interpreted as ) Schneider played poorly in the first outing due to the pressure of having Luongo sitting on the bench. Having to pull the messiah (Schneider) in the first game and having the crowd chant "Lou!!" is the worst case scenario they could have had.

I am suspect as to whether there is another player in the game on Luongo.

Gillis never said who it was, maybe he doesn't know who it was either, correct me if I'm wrong but he never finger pointed towards an NHL team in his rant.

Best I can tell, whoever trades for him is going to have 5.3 mil/yr cap hit for the next ~5 or so years that he plays, and then they will have about four (4) years of ~1.7 mil/yr cap charges after he retires to recoup the difference between his salary and his cap number.

That four (4) year penalty is going to be tough to swallow unless Vancouver trades him and keeps a % of his salary in the trade....

I could see NJ being in on it. Marty can't play much longer.

Good idea, but the right timing would be summer 2013.

I don't think so, it's a poor tactic if it is.

I think you are way off.

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis appeared on Team 1040 Radio in Vancouver on Friday and talked about the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team reportedly interested in Luongo and what he feels was their attempt to manipulate the market for the veteran goalie.
Quote:
"The notion that we were asking for too much was floated in the Toronto media by a team that was extremely interested in acquiring Roberto and were using every means possible to try and force us to do something that we didn't think was right. That's nothing new in this business and it's not the type of pressure that I'm going to succumb too."
So he slammed the Toronto media, not the Maple Leafs. Now he's using the media to garner interest.

Seems legit. Do it.
from the oilers perspective you do not get Schneider for Eberle. Ebs is coming off a 37 goal season and is project and predicted to score 50 goals in the next full season. Schneider is supposed to be the starter in Vancouver for the first time. Goalies are one of those positions where things can go side ways very quickly with the heads and I like Schnieder, but I would rather trade a guy like Eberle for a starting goalie one for one, when the starting goalie has atleast 2 seasons of being a starting goalie behind him, then trade Eberle for a guy we "hope"will be the go to guy. Also, Schneider has a three year deal and then he is UFA and eberle is signed till 2019. As crazy as this sounds, I would take Luongo for Eberle in a heartbeat over Scheider. While I do not like Luongo retirement contract, the fact Schneider is UFA after the 14/15 season has me more concerned

Just posturing. You think the other 28 GM's want to "help out Mike Gillis" right now?

Let the distraction grow for a bit and watch the price come down.

Now now, if you read that properly it's TSN making that assumption, Gillis only mentions Toronto media.

Some reports show that all teams that has owned the rights to that player within the initial front-loaded contract will be penalized so could be Vancouver + ______ for 1 million over 3-5 years.

Other reports show that the initial team who signed him is penalized solely regardless of who he plays for and retires with.

They still haven't mentioned what would happen if he was waived and simply "did not report to camp" thus voiding his Contract. There are many options.

That comment was directed at a poster who clearly didn't even know what I was referencing before he made a dumb comment, not you

They would offer Brodeur.

Vancouver get a proven goalie, with 3 Stanley cup and a final just last year, to carry them in the playoff.

Brodeur could also be a great mentor for Schneider

Brian Burke rule book 101 when it comes to trying in increase a trade value is to say you have a deal in place with team X--he has done it with every team he was in charge of. Gillis has followed Burke plan book this off season with the Luongo deal and this falls right into what Burke had previously had done several times. Go review nearly every maple leaf trade rumour in how Burke used and played the media to try and raise the trade market to what he wanted

New Jersey seems like a good fit. Is Brodeur retiring at season's end? Luongo would look good in a Devils jersey and Lamoriello doesn't seem to be bothered by long-term contracts and the implications they may have down the road.
