the Gillis pairing

Is it really a good idea to have the tallest player on the roster paired with the shortest player on the roster? How long can this actually work out? I'm sure there are pros and coins of this pairing. But, I'm just curious what y'all think of this pair. Good idea or bad idea?

I don't know if it's a "good" or "bad" idea, but it's not been a very good pairing thus far. I think it's more to do with Gill looking like the lockout is still going on for him.

I actually think it's a solid pairing. They compliment each other well on paper, just need to knock the rust off and get some chemistry. Give them time.

It hurts that neither have great north to south speed.

I wonder if we eventually transition to

Weber-Josi
Ellis-Klein
Gill-Blum
Hannan

Gill is 37 and plays like his age implies.

Ellis and Gill haven't been that bad really; they were +1 last night. It's a good pairing in terms of skillset; Ellis vroooms around the ice and Gill clears the crease and uses his 35 foot long stick to his advantage. I think our D as a whole is better than I feared it might be; giving up 5 goals in 2 games is decent. I think we roll with what we have for another 5-10 games and see where things shake out.

I worry about Blum; I say you dress 7 blueliners at some point after this road trip, have him split time on the second pairing with Hannan, and see what happens. Hannan isn't amazing, but Blum gave up some god awful goals last year.

I'd almost like to see Blum dressed as the 7th defenseman. It's not like McGrattan is actually doing anything.

Play Gill on the PK which is where he still brings a good value and Blum at e.s and pp.

we are two games in and all 3 pairings are different from last year.

barring injury, I suspect Trotz leaves things like they are to see if they are all going to gel...

Oh I agree. I just don't see Gill making it this season's schedule without some icetime control. He's like close to my age....

I don't know if it was just that Hannan's mistakes were more noticeable, but I think Ellis has done a pretty good job out there for the most part. I would not be upset if Trotz rolled a Klein-Ellis pairing out there.

I think I'd prefer to see Blum back to his 20game audition form and alternating Hannon and Gill. Lacking that, the pairings have been ok so far and certainly better than much of the "sky is falling" rhetoric following the suter debacle. That said - it's 2 games in with no pre-season, so......
