Seriously ! I think the NHL has its hands full at this time with issues .....moving teams to better markets etc . I do like the idea but some years away.

i'm not surprised by this thread in general, but i do have a suggestion
for a long while, there were a couple women who played pro roller hockey at an extremely high level; lisa giovanelli of the hartford fireants comes to mind
unite the myriad pro roller leagues and reinstall some of the rink capacity that has waned of late and make it a legit, unisex sport; it removes a lot of the perceived or real issues with regards to power and speed and makes it focus more on sick danglesauce
That I think would determine if it should or shouldnt.
Would there be enough demand to cover costs and post a profit?
My gut says - 'no'.

I agree with both of these points. As the parent of a daughter who lives and breathes hockey, I'd love to see an established professional league. But I don't think it would sell, and don't see any point to the NHL propping up a league that cannot stand on its own, as the NBA has done for years.
Women's pro sports just aren't marketable in the U.S. on a large scale, and I don't see hockey being any different.
Only 5 teams, but it's a start. All just play for the love of the game, for no money. They seem to take weekend roadtrips to play 2-3 games to save on travel expenses.
If you check the schedule, they also play in Hyannis, and RI sometimes. Pretty good gameplay, and they have some names I recognized from the Olympics like Hilary Knight, and Meghan Duggan. Not bad for $10, and the stands, as small as they were, were packed.
America and Hungary have won 15 of the last 21 Olympic Medals in Men's Swimming(200 metre backstroke) . Someone from either country has won the Gold Medal at the last 7 Olympics, and only once did they not win both Gold and Silver, yet I don't hear people complaining about that sport.

I'd watch it as much as I watch the WNBA, which is not at all sorry. Although I do find international women's soccer in the Olympics and World Cup interesting I have no interest in the domestic league for the sport (NWSL).
It would be nice to make something like this happen. Unfortunately, the NHL seems to have plenty of trouble running one league. Maybe after they stabilize the league and get on a healthy path for a few years it would be more realistic to revisit the concept. For now, they really need to keep their eye on the ball.
Another argument suggests that for preserving the purity of the game, it shouldn't commercialize unless there's a real necessity to preserve the game in general.
As soon as you make women's hockey "a thing," it degrades into whatever it can be to please lonely, large, drunk, white males.
Does the world really need more outlets for people to get paid to play a game? More outlets to exploit women? More outlets to take a game and surround it with garbage (like we went through with the lockout)?
Not trying to be some weirdo hippie white knight moron, though not trying doesn't preclude me from being one. Just saying there are other ways to see it if your vision sucks as much as mine does.
Also, the 2011 World Championship was held at UVM, and Gutterson (mere 4,000 capacity) wasn't even full. (They were practically giving away tickets at UVM games.)
That being said, it's not viable due to the lack of hitting. Gender aside- the game is slower and less physical. That's not appealing.

lol. So I read through the first page of the thread. Clicked on the multi button a few times to reply to specific posters and put my two cents in...then realized while reading the next page that I was replying to posts from 3 years ago! Needless to say I decided to pass.
Women don't play hockey. Hockey without hitting isn't hockey
While there may be a no hit rule, hitting does occur. Maybe we just want to see players carried off on stretchers instead of the other skills players possess.
If it's the first, did you know that women's hockey has more concussions world wide than any other sport? And that includes the NHL. It's not so contact free
To respond to OOG- IMO not yet. Give it another 5-10 years. The sport is growing but it isn't big enough either in terms of talent or fan support to justify a league. But I think it will happen someday. And the NHL should do everything it can to help grow the sport. Hockey is hockey.

In all fairness, I don't think just because someone thinks it will fail because of lack of physicality, means they enjoy seeing injuries.
I really enjoy the NFL. Much of the reason is because of the physicality. But I don't enjoy watching players being carried off on stretchers or being concussed. That said, I realize with the high level of physical play there will always be injuries...and sometimes severe ones. It does't mean I want to see players carried off on stretchers though.
I enjoy NHL hockey far more than I do watching college hockey. The major reason is because it is a faster and much more physical game. And admittedly, I also really enjoy the fights. It has nothing to do with wanting to see injuries/stretchers on the ice. For the NHL fans who aren't big on college hockey because of this reason, the woman's game is far less physical imo. Just my two cents.
Needless to say I decided to pass.
