Please, Benn isn't going to sit out the whole season.

The degree of harm of losing a good young player as you mentioned depends how you lose him... and the reasoning usually comes out. If he sits out the season and it gets around the NHL that he, and not the team, was the one being unreasonable, he will be less marketable and he may not be worth anything in your room if you let that happen and then bring him back.

As for the chances of anyone being traded being non-existent, does the name Wayne Gretzky mean anything to you?
How old was Gretzky when he was traded?

I'm at work so I can't confirm this is accurate:

Quote:
Dustin Leed ‏@D_LEED

If you want to know more about the RFA issues, quick put on NHLNetwork to hear @TSNBobMcKenzie
Quote:
Dustin Leed ‏@D_LEED

McKenzie says Benn and Stars are couple hundred $ apart on 5-yr deal. Of Benn, O'Reilly, Subban, Benn has biggest chance to get done quickly
Quote:
Dustin Leed ‏@D_LEED

Jamie Benn: couple hundred thousand* apart on deal* point is, they're not apart by much.
This is Dustin Leed's description on Twitter. Hopefully he wouldn't post BS or a flat out lie about what's on NHL Network:

Here's more about Dustin Leed from his website:

Quote:
Owner and Editor-in-Chief of The Hockey Guys. Philadelphia Flyers columnist and analyst at The Fourth Period Media Inc. and sports staff/writer for Lancaster Newspapers Inc. You can find me on Twitter: @D_LEED
His goal is obviously to be a serious member of the media rather than a rumor monger so hopefully this is accurate info about what Bobbie Mac said on the NHL Network.

Any Stars fans at home that can flip on NHL Network? They replay the hell out of this stuff usually.

Defending Big D is referencing the twitter account from above as a source about the deal being close.

Hopefully that guy is legitimate.

Wonder if they mean a couple hundred thousand dollars per season or in total contract value? If the latter, it's silly.

It's most likely that, but that still works out to only approx. $1m over the 5 year term and still makes it silly.

I imagine it's per season, but either way that would be very close. Standard for couple would obviously be about $200K. Even if he misspoke and meant several or closer to $300K or $400K ... you're only talking about $1.5 million or $2 million.

That is a big gap in terms of actual cash, but it's honestly fairly close in terms of the end game to a signing a deal.

It's hard to trust anyone on Twitter, but that guy at least seems to have a career where reporting BS would be a killer so hopefully this really happened. I'm surprised no one else has it though.

Pleaseeee be true. We could really use him back in the lineup and it'd be great if he was back in time for the Chicago game on Thursday.

From LeBrun:

Quote:
Of the three RFAs, my gut feeling says Benn will be the first of the three to sign. But that’s not sure thing.

I just don’t think they’re that far apart.

Look no further than the obvious comparables to see which deals are influencing this negotiation:

• John Tavares, six years, $33 million ($5.5 million average)
• Evander Kane, six years, $31.5 million ($5.25 million cap hit)
• Phil Kessel, five years, $27 million ($5.4 million cap hit)

Those are good comparisons because Benn is also coming off an entry-level contract and is a key offensive force on his team, just like those three players.

First off, the Benn camp won’t do six years. So there’s that. Benn has moved though from wanting three years to now being willing do to five years.

My guess is if the Stars were willing to sign off on something just north financially of the Kessel deal, then a deal will be done.

Also keep in mind, Benn's entry-level deal didn’t have any bonus money. So you can understand his desire to get paid now.

In 5 years Benn is 29 and will be in his prime then he could have his big payday like Richards. Thats a good lenght / solution for both sides.

Like when I put it out there that Modano would be signing with the Wings 36 hours before anyone else on the planet started reporting it. Guess that was more unsourced hearsay from me.

I understand trying to hold a level of integrity here but how many garbage sources are quoted here? I would think something coming from his best friend holds a little more weight. People can either discuss it or move on.

All good. Moving on....

good stuff. i don't buy into the lack of bonus money affecting negotiations, though. benn didn't get any because he wasn't considered a blue chip prospect way back when. he developed into it late.

whatever contract he gets should be based on future expectations, not on past contracts. but if benn really wants to get paid now, i'm not against a signing bonus of some kind (if it's allowed in the cba) so long as the cap hit is acceptable.

A signing bonus would be a sign of good faith from the team, and it would allow them to also lower the initial year salary.

He's missed 2 games, and I think it's safe to say he's not playing tonight. That means he'd get about 55% of his contract value this year unless part of it is a signing bonus.

You could give him a $3.5 million salary in Year 1, make $1.5 million a signing bonus, and he'd end up collecting nearly 75% of the actual cash value of his salary instead of just 55%.

2 completely different situations. Read the rule on libel.

The facts are that he's been training with the Victoria Royals. That's good enough for me.

It's perfect because five years will cover Benn's best goal scoring seasons. His goal production will be on the decline when he's looking for his big UFA score.

At the age of 28? I doubt that. 30-31 maybe.

Look at the trends in the NHL nowadays. It really wouldn't surprise me if it did (but I hope it doesn't).
