Red Sox would like to shorten their deal with Napoli to one-year to make sure the hip will be ok for 2 or 3 seasons without a lot of DL time

last i heard they were looking to add language such as in the drew and lackey contracts w/r/t existing injuries.

it's good work regardless.

Sorry missed this.

When I saw this about Napoli I laughed. I was expecting the Red Sox to climb to mediocrity.

Note: I am jaded I'm a Red Sox used to the 90's where I watched Bob Lobel giving sports broadcasts while looking like he was half in the bag

All signs point to Napoli, Sox reaching agreement. Sides are working on one/year deal; agent Grieper would not discuss specifics

This worked out great for the Red Sox. They don't have to commit $39M to Napoli and he's going to have to play his ass off because it's another contract year for him.

Welp, in retrospect Napoli made a massive mistake in turning down Texas' extension offer after the 2011 WS run. Good luck in Boston.

Great. Another Yankees killer on the Red Sox cause lord knows they haven't had enough over the years.

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/20...ular-necrosis/

"That Mike Napoli ended up accepting a one-year, $5 million guarantee from the Red Sox after originally agreeing to a three-year, $39 million contract suggested that something pretty bad was going on with his hip. The details came out today, courtesy of Napoli’s agent: Napoli was diagnosed with avascular necrosis in both of his hips.

Avascular necrosis is pretty much what it sounds like: the death of bone due to a lack of blood supply. According to Wikipedia, it’s most common in the hip, though it can also take place at the shoulder, knee and other joints."

......I am not a Dr, but steroid use is a cause of avascular necrosis.

"There are several avascular necrosis causes, some of which are related to trauma (trauma-related avascular necrosis) and some of which are not related to trauma (nontraumatic avascular necrosis). Steroid medicines and alcohol use are the two most common causes of nontraumatic avascular necrosis."

Just because steroids are a cause doesn't make it the cause.
