I trust Bergevin more than Meehan at this point. As for the ice time argument... This as to be the more stupid arguments ever... If you think so, you probably were for the Rivet and Brisebois contract in 1990's and early 2000's... They both played a lot but were still overpaid by a fair much. The canadiens with them was not even as bad as the canadien were last year. I do think that Subban is a good defenseman but I would rather have Kulikov than him at this point in time ...
I'd trust Bergevin over Meehan, but when I guy that obviously loves being on the ice as much as Subban does is sitting out, I'm inclined to suspect he's being seriously lowballed
so... a 20 year old playing on a struggling team in a franchise worst season, tried to do a bit too much?
Kulikov may very well develop into a similar, or even superior, player than Subban is/will be... but nothing we've seen thus far would indicate that. Subban wasn't just given a bigger role, he took a bigger role. let's not forget that he was an impact player in his first 2 NHL playoffs. In the 2nd year, he was quite reasonably the best player on the ice for both teams in the 7-game showdown with the eventual cup winners.
Sorry to break it to you.. but it's not very hard to take a bigger role on a team with gill, kaberle, diaz, emelin, gorges, etc on D. They just simply are NOT good.
and whoever mentioned OEL.. that's just retarded.. Kulikov is way better than OEL.
OEL was sent to the minors multiple times.
Kulikov has no rep because of where he plays, it's as simple as that. Subban is over hyped like many Habs.. it's starting to become a joke around here.
I'm reserving judgement on MB but if he handles future signings like this one with key players involved I'm going to question his competency. 2 years at 2.75 mil is a joke. But hey were paying a defenceman with 2 bad knees 5.75 mil and a defenseman who can't play d to save his life or is effective in the PP 4.25 mil. No wonder this organization hasn't won a cup in 20 years.
edit:I know MB isn't responsible for Markov and Kaberle's contracts but that doesn't mean he has to lowball Subban
Absofrigginlutely right. As much as anyone, PK has shown he's one of our best players. There he is, a precise example of who we want to build around, and we can lock him up for the foreseeable future with a contract that will end up saving us money in the long run. Overpaying slightly now will be more economical than being forced to vastly overpay in two years.
Does it set a precedent? Yes. It shows the Habs value talent and will pay accordingly.
Exactly, I don't buy the arguments that this will set a precedent for future RFA's that don't have PK's ability to demand money, just because PK got his. The whole thing is embarrassing for MB imo.
Do you guys think Bergevin is seriously thinking about trading PK?
I seriously doubt it. BUT... you have to at least wonder what Philadelphia would offer for a good D right about now. If there's one lesson we should've learned from Gauthier, it's never ignore the other GMs.
