Michael Ferland to Pittsburgh

Hello, I'm wondering if Michael Ferland is available? We could send one of our younger defensemen to Calgary (if you're interested). Pittsburgh needs a power-forward on our team for the future.

So does Calgary. Hard to get a read on Ferland right now, he has shown some good promise but not sure if that'll translate to the NHL. Doubt a deal can be made barring a ridiculous offer, Calgary doesn't have alot of players like him in the system.

I imagine he would be available for trade in reality, but I personally like him and feel that his trade value isn't really strong right now in relation to his potential. Who would you be offering for him?

Perhaps a deal around Scott Harrington?

i would seriously consider that as a Pens fan. Harrington has some good leadership quality at a young age along with talent but the Pens have a plethora of other defensemen waiting for a shot at the NHL. what they don't have is a lot of young forwards also waiting for a shot at the NHL.

Pass. Harrington played for Team Canada at Worlds. Michael Turdland wouldn't crack our depth chart.

Ben Lovejoy, on the other hand, is available.

What the hell has Ferland ever done to be worth a guy like Harrington?

You guys are nuts. You're so desperate for wingers that you're willing to deal defense prospects who have distinguished themselves at every level and against the best of their peers for much lesser forward prospects.

its more likely he knockout his friend out in a club not the dub. This guy definitely has some growing up to do. Only have heard negative things about him off ice wise.

Yeah, Ferland's value I feel has only dropped since last year, in my opinion. He had a tough start to the year in the AHL and ended up back in the WHL. He could still definitely be someone in the future, but it would be a weird time for Pittsburgh to be inquiring about him.

Not giving up our 4th best defense prospect for a guy who probably won't make the NHL.

Settle down, buddy. He's a good power forward, he has the potential to be a Ryane Clowe or Jamie McGinn in the future. Since we have many solid prospects that are defensemen, I thought we could trade away Scott Harrington. We already have Robert Bortuzzo/Harrison Ruopp who might be good shutdown defensemen in the future.

I don't understand why you're getting angry over a trade purposal.

Joe Morrow, Simon Despres, Derrick Pouliot, Brian Dumoulin, Olli Maatta?

Michael Ferland is a marginal prospect with little chance at an NHL future. His chances of becoming a Ryane Clowe are beyond remote.

Harrington, on the other hand, has played exceptionally both in the OHL and WJCs, and is considered by informed sources to be the best shutdown defenseman in junior hockey. Bortuzzo and Ruopp are decent prospects, but don't have anything close to that pedigree or upside.

Just because we have a bunch of quality defense prospects doesn't mean we should be giving them away for any old forward prospect.

It's easy to make an argument for Harrington over the last two. All that needs to be said is that he was outstanding against the very best of his peers. Neither of those two can say the same.

Harrington is better than both of those players right now.

Holy mother of pearl...Harrington for Ferland being suggested by a Penguins fan?

No...just...no. Emphatically no.

Getting to see every game Ferland has played since he has been traded, He does not look remotely close to nhl material. He plays hard don't get me wrong but I don't think hes anything remotely special.

What makes you say that? From what I've heard, he has a good set of hands, plays very physical, he's good in front of the net and he also has a quick release in his shot. His skating needs to improve, but I think he what it takes to be a good 2nd/3rd line power forward in the future.

Perhaps we could trade Philip Samuelsson+ for him.

It usually takes power-forwards longer to develop.
