Totally agree.look what it did to clowe. Remember when he used to shoot? Now he just tries to be a slower less good version of big joe.

Agreed, especially when Thornton has the talent to improve in that area (or any other) if he really focused on it. Crosby sucked at faceoffs, worked on that part of his game during the offseason, and it's now one of his strengths. And remember what happened back when Daniel Sedin was out with an injury? Henrik, one of the biggest pass-first guys in the league, started scoring goals and won the Hart trophy.

How is he shirking (the word you're looking for) his responsibilities? His job is to help the team win and it's silly to think that him doing what he's best at somehow compromises that.

Joe is one of the best ever because of exactly what he showed on that first goal in Calgary. He was completely covered and STILL got the puck to Patty. Everyone knows what Joe is going to try to do and he still is near the top of the league in assists every year. Patty is a better goalscorer than he is. There is nothing at all wrong with getting him the puck.

No one on the bottom six is in the same sentence as Gretzky and Lemieux for anything, so that's a non-comparison. Heck no one on the team other than Joe is in the same sentence as those two for anything. So yeah, let him do what he has the talent to do on a historic level.

Who said the coaches are letting it slide? I could say "I hate Marleau's passiveness" and it's just as bad that people let that slide.
The coaches might be telling Thornton to shoot more, and sometimes he still instinctively passes. The coaches might be telling Marleau to play more aggressive when he's not scoring, but sometimes he doesn't.
