It's not a cheap sport.
Do you live in Tuvalu or something? Top level goalie skates will not run you more than $700. The highest of high level player skates will run at around $850.

That said, Chicken Parm is still wicked off on his estimate. Joke's on Ferraro!

Again, in fairness to BradD.... unless we're talking about a Mario/Gretzky/Yzerman level player, you at least consider trades, and especially if there is a great need... such as our need for D.

this is a bad, bad, bad team. poorly constructed and it shows every single period. outscored by 6 goals by 2 non-playoff teams, hahaha. wow.
Funny, this is the same team that hunter had minus a heartless winger and a terrible D man and he seemed to get them playing a great team defensive system. Brooks said it himself

It's not all on Oates, cause he needs time but his system doesn't seem like anything right now

It's just when you saw us play under Hunter, you knew how we played, we're gonna play, you knew what the positions were and can almost predict the scheme.

Here everyone just looks lost and is just out of position and just doing whatever

The skates for our son cost near that. Pro equipment is often customized for the individual player. A couple thousand isn't outta the ballpark.

So, if we start off 0-20...do we try and sign an actual head coach midseason?

If you knew the hockey equipment manufacturing game, you'd be in it.

I will give the "new" coaches a pass this season regarding how this team performs.

The architect of the team I will not. Caps don't make the playoffs then Ted needs to find a new GM.

The best part about the Caps turning it around will be the disappearance of Detroit fans who fluff their children on a ****ing Caps forum.

Positives outweighed in a big way though by the ease with which Winnipeg created chances and then scored, and the general lack of urgency. Johansson needs to be demoted, maybe even scratched, until he gets some confidence back, cause right now he is wear attacking plays go to die.
No question... you're correct. Schultz has looked even worse this year than in the past. You wonder how he could achieve it, but he has.

My kids goalie skates cost about $800, and that was a few years ago.

Pro's aren't using off the shelf equipment.... their equipment is usually customized for them.

Add the skates, stick, blocker, etc, and you're very quickly to the $5k range.

Ferraro was spot-on. No surprise: he's a pro, and knows what equipment costs,

I was just wondering how it is that a guy watching a Caps game in NY has to watch about comments he makes in his living room.

Look, maybe your wife doesn't like you complaining, who knows? But on its face, the comment seems odd. Nothing personal.

Again, in fairness, Hunter's style that he enforced is hardly anything new.

I had a story related to me once by a TV executive explaining why some network exes were so anti-hockey.

He said that in the early days of TV, when they would try to televise hockey games, the weaker teams would change their style and start playing a man to man, defenceive style grinding game, so as not to embarrass themselves on the tube.

These teams would still lose, but they'd lose 3-1, instead of 7-1, and thus not embarrass themselves.

Novice fans, of course, want high-scoring, not grinding hockey. So televising hockey quickly became second to "I Love Lucy" re-runs.

ALSO: we're being a little hard on AO. He is trying. Just don't think he's ever gonna make a two-way player.

Liked the fire in Hendricks yesterday. Jay Beagle on the PK is something special.

The 2nd fight Hendricks was in surprised us. Kudo's to him for not giving up, and at least trying to stir the team up.

1. Ovechkin and Backstrom need to be split up. The way things are going right now Backstrom is suffocating Ovechkin's game and Ovechkin isn't helping Backstrom's.

2. If we're not splitting up Ovechkin and Backstrom, put Ovechkin back on LW until Laich heals at least. I did not anticipate how much Backstrom would be lost with Ovechkin at RW. It seems like he's reflexively spending half a second looking for Ovie at LW and by the time he adjusts the play has gone by. Biggest issue I saw with Ovechkin's game was how slow his line was to get him the puck when they were in transition. If you want to run and gun, that puck needs to be on his stick the moment we gain possession. I'm not fully willing to give up on Ovie at RW but right now it would probably be best to put everyone in their natural state as much as possible just to get our feet under us.

3. We have to put Johansson at center, at least until he recoups enough value to be tradeable for a core piece that fits what we're trying to accomplish better. He's a complete waste at wing and is on a path to a Wolski-ish career there (pre 2013 rebound Wolski).

Lines I'd go with

Ovechkin Ribeiro Brouwer
Wolski Backstrom Fehr
Chimera Johansson Ward
Hendricks Perreault Beagle

4. Orlov can't get healthy soon enough. Hopefully Oates lets him play as a RD and doesn't blindly try to shove a square peg into a round hole

5. With Burke having been fired McPhee has become the most directionless GM in the league. He thought we were at the top in 2010, done with the rebuild, and has been tinkering and flailing around since then. This is like if the Kings think they're finished with the rebuild in 2010 and sign a bunch of complementary crap instead of going for Mitchell, Penner, Richards and Carter in the coming years. We have one guy who can snipe, maybe 2 if Fehr surprises (1 on the roster right now), so we're reduced to playing a garbage game with... Wolski, Brouwer, Johansson and Chimera as supporting wingers. Every single goal we've scored has been point blank. If that's how you wanna go, you better have Hartnell, Smyth and Perry in your top 6. Ovechkin aside, no other team in the league has such an unholy combination of flaky and offensively inept rounding out their wings.
Alex,

Good post.... especially part 5. I think that's what gets so many of us... how the tank could be so empty right now after all those #1 picks he/we had.

@CoachsCornerCBC: Jets played perfect road game. Good for them. WSH players should be embarrassed. Not many guys worked up a sweat. They should check their
@CoachsCornerCBC: underwear. All the guys except Hendricks. Him and Thorburn had a beauty. A lot of empty seats there.

There isn't really anything captivating about this team so far but it was still a bit surprising to see so many empty endzone seats in the third.

solution 1:

- buy out Ovechkin
- let him spend one year in KHL (and play at OG), next season
- sign him for the difference (small cap hit obviously)

solution 2:

ignore all panicking guys )) it's too early until it's too late

This would've been the year for that. Short season, he was already playing in the KHL, etc.

Though, I can't even imagine the cap-circumvention penalties that would be levied on this team if that happened. If New Jersey lost a 1st rounder for signing Kovalchuk to a contract that everyone was doing at that point, I'm thinking the Caps would lose a whole draft (and probably Seth Jones as a part of it, given the record an Ovechkin-less caps would accumulate).

They certainly didn't have issues leaving after the second period.

Honest question. Ovy and Nicky seemed to be doing fine in the KHL. Why the current struggles? Would they rather be living and playing overseas?

So...Ovechkin would re-sign here as a UFA...after we essentially call him a lazy fatass and cut him?

Because the KHL isn't the NHL?
