Ruff stated on WGR that Gerbe, Mccormick and Leino are all in the same boat: It was really up to the player to say they are ready to go.

Gerbe and McCormick are cleared for contact in practice.

He will require offseason surgery, but plans to rehab and get through this season with medical treatment. Leino had surgery on his left hip as a Flyer and feels he probably should have had double hip surgery at the time." (Tim Panaccio)

Looks like the Sabres should have taken the same route as Stars did with D. Roy.

Gerbe looks like he'll be back Thursday and will skate with Grigs and Ott.

Two things:

1. That means Hecht to fourth line?

2. We have to make a roster move. What is it?

#Amerks LW Zemgus Girgensons (concussion) may be out past 2-game series in Abbotsford Feb. 5-6. Possible for then, Feb. 12 or 15 more likely.

Has Girgensons been concussed before? I don't want this to affect the career of a prospect I am very excited about.

Yeah, my excitement took a jolt.

He was also concussed earlier this season from a hit he took. I think he missed 2-3 weeks.

I also remember seeing a pre-draft segment on him where he took a hit up high in the USHL playoffs, broke his jaw, came back to set up a tying/GW? goal, before shutting it down in the 3rd period. Good bet he was concussed there too.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino has not played this season due to a hip injury. He was placed on injured reserve before Thursday night’s game at the Carolina Hurricanes, but Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said he does not anticipate Leino needing surgery.

"There's no talk about surgery right now. We might as well just squash that," Ruff said. "Maybe down the road it happens; I don't know. Right now, there are some other treatment options that are possible."

Leino took the ice this morning at First Niagara Center in an optional skate with Cody McCormick, who also is on injured reserve, and anticipated healthy scratches Matt Ellis, TJ Brennan and Mike Weber. The Sabres and Hurricanes face each other in the second game of a back-to-back home-and-home series tonight at 7 p.m. Carolina won last night’s contest, 6-3.

Ruff told the media after this morning’s team meeting that Leino has been re-examined and had an MRI eaxam. The MRI looked “OK.” Among other treatments, they’ve tried giving Leino some rest.

"These hip things are things that can go in a lot of different directions," Ruff said. "We've had one player last year that had the same treatment Ville's going through and has been good ever since."

Leino skated for 20 minutes today before his hip started to tighten up again, according to Ruff. No timetable has been set as to when he will return to the lineup.

"We're going to do everything we possibly can to get him healthy," Ruff said. "We're just going to see where it goes."

Like he said, Leino will make it through the season with treatment and require off-season surgery, which is just great (you can't buy out injured players).

Not to turn this into a "buy Leino out" thread, but we were warned about his bum hips.
They've been a problem for just about as long as he's been in the NHL.
It's just another issue on top of all the other issues with him.

Also more than likely had a concussion or two in the USHL with his style of play. He took a few pucks to the face including a season ending one, and got rocked in a fight during his time there.

How many games do you see Vanek missing? Is it serious? I know DTD, but what was the cause of the injury?

Thomas Vanek, who suffered a muscle strain Friday night against Carolina, is out for this afternoon's matchup with the Capitals.

"Thomas isn’t OK," coach Lindy Ruff said in Verizon Center. "Just day-to-day, really. He skated this morning but isn’t quite there."

Don't want him to rush it, he does every year and it reduces his play

Ideally, he misses just enough time to ensure us another 9th place finish.

Please God no!

Update, per Mike Schopp: Vanek at optional skate. Possibility for game tomorrow.

î hope Van can play today, really makes for a shaky first line without him. i guess it just shows how important it will be to resign him at the end of next season.
