The discussion about it being similiar to anything in Edmonton is frankly ridiculous. Think more along the lines of plus 15s everywhere in Calgary.
Hahaha,

I was thinking the same thing. Google Calgary Pedway. They are nice for pedestrians and good for traffic.

And I'd wager they cost a lot less than $50 million a pop.

Wait, i stand corrected...

Clearly they are same...

Here's the other side just for perspective...clearly it's even dingier and darker...

Oh, sorry: it's a really big, really expensive pedway.

Oh absolutely - the +15 system is wonderful. We don't have it to the same extent but there are some pedways already in downtown Edmonton.

But the winter garden is much, much bigger and wider. And yes, I do question whether it's worth $50 million dollars.

I'll point the obvious out for you here....concrete is cheaper than stainless steel and glass.

So, in your opinion, ~$50M is a perfectly reasonable amount of money to spend on something to get people over a road without having to go outside?

If all it was going to be used for was to be a pedway across 104th, then i would agree with you. The fact is that it's being designed to be much more than that, and that is why the cost is so high:

http://www.edmonton.ca/city_governme...er-garden.aspx

P.S. A little bit of research goes a long way.

Oh...in the pictures at the link i posted. Did you notice that the winter garden was lit up underneath? Dark and spooky i tell you!

  • Large covered multi-use space that spans 104th Avenue.
  • Ensures safe traffic flows for pedestrians, bikes and vehicles.
  • Serves as the primary entrance into the arena complex.
  • Provides a climate controlled event venue that the public can use.
  • Provides for a safe pedestrian connection to the Plaza, the arena, the LRT, and the businesses and communities to the north.
  • The area below the Winter Garden span is an active, walkable area with views into the arena’s functional areas – including a television production studio.

And what part of that list makes it so much more than a pedway?

Good to see you can read the overview...did you even look at the rest of the page to see how they plan on using it? Did you not notice the concert plan? The boxing ring plan, or volleyball court plan? Did you not notice that the actual pedway aspect is a very footprint of the winter garden? Did you even look at the cross section? If you can't even see the possibilities here, than i can't help you.

Going by your post i guess not, but i shouldn't be suprised at this point.

You sound like someone who got a leatherman and only used the pliers while complaining at how expense the "pliers" were.

I'm not sure if you realize but boxing and MMA both do quite well in Edmonton. They fill up smaller shows quite often for various minor orgs, and MFC does ok as well, although the Pav makes things difficult for them.

I also don't think it's so much the idea of things being a hot ticket in the winter garden, I think it's more the idea of giving a place for local athletes to perform, and have a chance for people to see them...even if it is only a hundred or so.

Saw all that stuff. And it just confirms that $50M is a stupid waste of money, money that could be better spent either on the actual arena itself or on other things. Not on something expressly designed to be a place people pass through on their way to other places.

Whoooosh right over your head. You just proved you missed the entire point.

I'm talking about design A, while you're talking like design A is actually design B. Capiche?

I think the winter garden is the true selling point to the city as it provides something unique that only Edmonton has, that not only handles pedestrian traffic through cold weather, but can also hold smaller events of its own, like small community concerts that is open to the public during winters without the cold hampering with equipment

I'm well aware that the winter garden concept has space for a bunch of other crap. My argument, and has been plenty clear from the get go, is simply that it's a waste of money, a white elephant. It's not a vital component of the project, it's merely a shiny bauble that won't, IMO, add much of anything to the overall experience except increasing the cost of the whole project.

I view it similarly to building a new house. Yes, maybe you could build a house for $400,000; but what about all of the extra add-ons that give it more character, better look, etc. Cheaper is not always better.
