Those tax dollars wouldn't exist without the arena.

I will spell it out for you, people won't develop in the area if there is no arena. Those developments that arise from the arena (the adjacent commercial developments and planned hi-rises in the area) will have a portion of their tax dollars allocated.

Did you not understand that the CRL is for NEW developments?

So if Katz ever has to sell it won't matter. The team is still safe here for 35 years. Great news. Now about fixing that on-ice product... don't take 35 years to fix it.

Every time Mandel "negotiated" the deal got worse. That's impressive.

At this point, I just want that damn shovel into the ground. Edmonton and Edmontonians alike need to shed their small town mentality and start embracing change.

Edmonton's downtown is a joke and Rexall is a dump. Oilers, their fans, and the city deserves way more.

The province isn't gonna fork over the money they need, i can't see the city or katz giving a dime more than what they have proposed. You've got to dance through rain drops if you want to get anything done with our bureaucrats, and the provincial government has said many time they aren't going to use government money for private projects.

$600 million?

It was $400 million before. What a sham.

Guess this city loves just bending over and taking it.

Province isn't gonna give the money, and I don't blame them.

Good to see that another "hockey town" needs gambling money to help build an arena.

Yet betting on the NHL would be bad. The irony.

LOL @ comments that they're not using public/tax payer's money. Good one.

Also, the Government taking the moral value of gambling to make up some difference. Wow, way to set an example. So, when there's people with gambling problems, they can fund programs to help with that using tax payer's money.

http://www.ctvnews.ca/sports/edmonto...rena-1.1126294

Good article and also, read the comments. Katz has enough money.... doesn't he own Rexall Pharmacy and he should fund the arena 100%. It's his business, let him finance it himself.

Rexall Place is a dump and I've turned down tickets to events there because it's a dump and a terrible place to be when packed. So glad it will be replaced. Could care less where the money comes from, even if it might be tax payers dollars since the return on it will pay for itself.

Katz may be worth enough to finance it himself but billionaires don't get that rich by using their own money to make money.

Yeah, at least from the outside looking in, as a person that's never even been to Western Canada, most of the stuff I've heard about the place is about as follows....

Awesome ice, meh almost everything else.

The ice hasn't been very good since the 03/04 season. Old ice plant. We used to make fun of Dallas' ice all the time but right now Rexall's ice is only a smidgen better. Once we get the new rink we'll be able to say that we have some of the best ice in the league again.

Alberta premier says there will be no lottery or gaming to make up arena shortfall.

Not really unexpected. According to the premier, the city has appox. 1.1 billion in the MSI program which has already been given by the province.

The funding gap will be closed. Just a matter of which pocket it comes out of.

Well, they are used to dealing with Northlands....

http://www.edmontonsun.com/2013/03/1...over-indy-debt

Quote:
One city councillor is expressing frustration after a Northlandís plea for city money to cover $700,000 in Edmonton Indy back-debt.

ďI was frustrated by the losses the city experienced with this race in general,Ē said Coun. Kim Krushell Friday. ďAnd now, we are still not done with this issue.Ē

The Indy officially ended when Octane Motorsports Events Inc. ó the promoters who put the kill order on the race ó went belly up in October.

They left behind more than $5 million in unpaid bills, mostly to creditors including several small businesses from the Edmonton area.

But strangely, itís not Octane set to approach city council Wednesday looking for $696,675 in funds. Itís Northlands, an entity Krushell says hasnít been in charge of the Edmonton Indy since 2009.
Thank the gods that they aren't involved in this new arena....

Another step towards the Oilers new arena

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=420433

Quote:
On Wednesday, city councillors also voted in favour of using $45 million from the city's portion of provincial funds for municipal infrastructure to make up for a chunk of the missing money.
See the money is there all along. I'm sure they'll figure out the rest.

Kind of like how the 30 year lease has guaranteed the Coyotes won't leave Phoenix.

There is no commitment Katz (or any owner) can make that will guarantee the Oilers stay.

I was there back in 2007, and I've never seen such a dead downtown. I mean, there's nothing there. But there's a lot of potential in that area, a lot of empty space throughout that whole area (Not just where they want to put the arena.). The people there deserve better.

If everyone had stuck to the original plan, it certainly wouldn't have cost as much as it does now. All because a few small groups were hell bent on derailing any such plans.

This seems to be a theme, sadly, that plagues Edmonton. The correct lessons should be taken from this, but I doubt it.

The only time I've been downtown Edmonton and Rexall was a Tool concert a few years ago, and... yeah. Nothing to write home about.
