I missed the Sharks vs. Oilers game. Was Schultz leaving the zone practically before the puck again?

I was watching it on and off and yeah he did that a few times. He was very aggressive offensively. In his own zone he's a bit lost. He got really badly burned by Thornton/Marleau on the third San Jose goal where he and the other Schultz both went to cover Thornton who had the puck, leaving Marleau (who was J.Schultzs man) wide open in the slot.

Like Paul said, he got burned pretty bad, and he can also be handled physically. I can't wait until he has to play against Getzlaf.

He's just not very good defensively away from the puck. I know a lot of people joke about certain players being 4th forwards, but with him it seems an accurate description. He's good at it, but holy crap would I be nervous with him in the D zone.

Edit: it makes me wonder how some Oiler fans can say he's good defensively. has it really been so long since they've seen good defense?

I thought the Oilers were going 48-0 and winning the cup because of all their great prospects?!!

He was getting worked by Jumbo's line. Idk why he was out there against them so often.

Justin is a PP specialist, I still think he will become solid in his own end, of course never great. And in a year or two Justin will be a very good 2nd or 3rd defenseman with offensive stardom power.

Beside this, the Oilers are a big joke! They have all the offensive talent you can ask for but this team is defensivly passive as hell. Plus they have an AHL goalie. Personally I see them again as a bottom 5-7 team. Sure they will score a lot due to their offensive stars but the defense just open. It's one side when you stay at your man and get outpowered, but they leave holes everywhere. They just don't cover the other team well. I also believe that they can not play harder, most of thier forwards are way to soft.

From what I saw, they were basing it off of plus-minus. Great stat.

I'm both surprised and not surprised at how bad (it sounds like) Schultz is defensively.

That was his problem entering college. And even 2 seasons ago. Which is exactly why I was always wary of him as a prospect. But he supposedly got a lot better at it his final year in college.

I've watched both Oiler games so far and I've been impressed at where he is for a rookie. I am literally watching those games for the simple hope of wanting to see him screw up and or get crushed. Where he is at for a rookie is very impressive. For example he's miles ahead of where Sbisa was his first season. His offensive instincts are sick but he gets lost in his own end if a team is able to cycle.

This might sound bad (don't care) but the thing that looks like it could hurt him developing wise is the Oilers look to be overwhelming him. He starts out good and then struggles more as the game goes on. Personally I hope he loses all confidence and becomes a career AHL defenseman but if he's able to round out his defensive game, he's gonna be a great player.

You guys must be mistaken. The Oilers have already given him a low number while Yakupov must still earn his. He is a superstar in the making. Case closed.

It's worth noting, though, that Schultz is 22 while Sbisa was 19. That's a pretty big difference.

Watched the highlights of Sharks-Oilers. Schultz and co didn't really look like a NHL-team defensively for that 1st period.

I know you're joking, but I'm pretty sure Yakupov chose that number.

Well, in that case one has to wonder why nobody earns a low number in EDM. If those guys are that good why do they keep picking first every year?
