Yeah I'd love to see Nystrom-Eakin-Smith once Benn re-signs. Minimizing Morrow's minutes needs to be a priority and short of bringing up Vincour Nystrom is the best bet with the two kids. His motor and willingness to forecheck could become a nice combo for all three this season.

As a Habs fan (Subban), I know how you guys can feel... We get a copy/paste situation over here.

Just sorry that I've picked Benn a little too early in my fantasy draft thinking it was a matter of days before he'd sign.

I don't really remember which media person brought up Kopitar as a comparable first, but it really does seem to fit now that I look at him. He signed back in 2009 so he really wasn't fresh on my mind.

In his 3 years before signing, Kopitar had two 20 goal years one one 30 goal year. Benn never had 30 goals, but he scored 70 in three years compared to Kopitar's 79.

Kopi was a better point producer getting 204 compared to Benn's 160.

Since Kopitar was coming off a 3 year ELC, he only had 4 years to UFA. If you only look at the first 5 years of his deal, only 1 was a free agent year. The same would be true of a 5 year deal for Benn.

In Anze's first 5 years he earns $32.4 million or just under $6.5 million/year. When you consider that contracts typically tend to escalate over the years, a 3 year contract to Kopitar who was slightly better as a point producer is a pretty good comparable.

I've rationalized $6.5 million a year ... can we now please get it done?

Here's another terrible comparable that works in Benn's favor:

Travis Zajac ... 4 years ago.

The guy got just under $4 million a year for 4 years. He has a 40 point season, a 30 point season, and then one nice 20 goal/60 point season before signing.

When you start looking past some of the recent contracts to 3 and 4 years ago, you kind of do see where Benn is coming from. He's better than Zajac IMO, and if the rumors for 5 years are true he's willing to give up 1 UFA year which costs a premium typically.

EDIT: The other thing you start to realize is what were Seguin and Tavares thinking? They left money on the table, and probably did the nice thing of taking a slight discount.

No, I just trade him for PK Subban and some other valuable asset that we can use.

Because obviously they aren't going to get Subban signed.

You dont need to say "IMO", Benn's flat out better.

Makes you wonder if that contract actually created more of a separation between the sides.

"Yeah Joe let's go with tha....hold up a sec I'm watching the ticker. Zajac just signed for what? Sorry Joe things have changed."

Is there a good chance a deal gets done before next week?

Sorry, asking for selfish fantasy reasons.

Stepneski update:

Mark Stepneski ‏@StarsInsideEdge

Nothing new on Jamie Benn contract talks. Not much movement recently, talks appear to be an at impasse at the moment.
For all of the fantasy lurkers, Mark Stepneski is Dallas' official writer/blogger. He's a team employee.

Impasse?

Maybe Benn is trying to negotiate a recording contract while the Stars are insisting that he plays hockey.

Starting to get into bad territory with this deal. Couple hundred thousand off and terms seem to be apart. Doesn't look too good.

The other weird thing is the official Twitter feed from his junior team (Not WHL or BCHL, before that) said he would sign a $33 million contract in the next few days.

I think that was yesterday, but I didn't want to post it. Just seems funny they'd chime in.

Wth? That's a really odd thing for a team to do.

This is starting to have the feel of something that could turn sour at the drop of a hat.

I'm curious as to what the dynamic between Gaglardi and GMJN is like right now.

Here's the tweet FYI:

Quote:
Peninsula Panthers ‏@ppanthersvijhl

Former @ppanthersvijhl forward @Gregscott08 still doing what he does best, work his tail off in the AHL for the Marlies. Leafs are next!!
My guess is they were referencing the DBD article rather than any inside info. DBD's popular guess for Benn's contract has been 5 years for $33 million. I think I've seen Worley go with that several times. He's also said he'd be surprised if Benn wasn't done by this weekend ... of course Worley previously stated he'd be shocked if the deal wasn't done by Monday, 1/21.

I really think the big hold up is term. You know they'll cave and give him the dollars he wants, but the term is a completely different game.
