We're not going to run into a hot goalie every time, so if they play like this they more we'll be seeing some comfortable wins. We could have easily won this game as badly as St Louis won their home opener against Detroit. I don't think Howard's very good but he played great this game.
This is the post all of this is referenced toward.
Why? Because he played behind a very good team? And now that that team isn't so great, look at him. There is nothing special about Howard, and it'll be proven this year. He's an OK goalie in a league where most goalies are pretty good.
I would take Lehtonen, Quick, Smith, Lundqvist, Fleury, Miller, Rinne, Luongo, Kipprusoff, Varlamov, Rask, Bryzgalov, Price, Pavelec, Backstrom, Halak, Ward, Hiller and Brodeur over him.
Fair enough. I disagree with those opinions as well. Somehow the argument about him being an average starter has become a slight against Howard too in this conversation.

Right dude, I'm not saying ALL OF YOU think he's bad. My posts are towards the people defending those.
The Wings weren't that close to a playoff position before the surge, Howard's stats and play weren't out of this world. He might not have drowned them, but he didn't pull them back to shore untill the team got it together.
He might have had Red Wings fans saying it, but he wasn't a serious contender any more than Brian Elliot, Halak, Kippursoff and Theodore were.
They were, Howard wasn't the best goalie or even a top 3 goalie but he was certainly great that year.

Now do you have a question about Benn or are you going to continue whinging incessantly?
I didn't say I think Howard is better than Lehtonen...
I'm not whining, afraid of a little discussion?

Lol what? Osgood isn't half the goalie Howard is, even if he has more Cups.

Reason: merging into 1 post
"Named the 2009–2010 Detroit Red Wings Rookie of the Year in voting by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association."?
"Only NHL goalie to face a penalty shot in each of his first two games."?
AHL All-Rookie team? I actually lol'd rereading that one.
Steve Mason wasa Calder winner. Don't see anyone supporting him as a top notch goalie.
He was an All-star one time. Wow, I'm extremely impressed. Guess who else made it that year? Brian Elliott. Guess he's a great goaltender too?
And NCAA rarely translate to the NHL, especially for goalies. The only stats and accomplishments that matter for goalies are in the NHL.
His NHL stats are above-average at best, and that can be attributed to Detroit's style of play and success as a team in the past few years.
Howard is a top 20 goalie. He's a definite starter. He's not great, though.
No. Watch Detroit play, we play a puck possession style with that makes our defense seem a lot better than it is. We have the puck a ton so we don't allow a ton of shots but when we do allow shots they are generally good chances. Giving up this many breakaways isn't something new to us this year, it's happened quite a bit the last couple of years. Detroit's D hasn't been the same since our Cup run in 08 really. Howard helps out the D a hell of a lot more than the D helps out him.
We need all the dmen we can get right now. Averaging like three injuries a game...Cola, Ericsson, White, Kindl, Helm, Mursak, Bertuzzi, Samuelsson, Gustavsson all out. Should've traded for Fistric
looks like Rome is gonna be making his Stars debut tomorrow night. I liked how jordie benn played at detroit. Intrigued to see what Rome can bring to the table though
Don't see a problem, to be honest. You've just got some pretty radical opinions (for this board) and you're defending them. That what makes this place so interesting.
Well I appreciate that man. Most of the time I'm on par with what the majority think, but I've always seen the game a little bit differently than most of the people on here or the official forums.
