*ALL* PK Subban talk (News/Speculation/Rumors/Proposals) II
Edmonton offer sheets Subban on a 6 year deal @ $6.5M/year, what does Montreal do?
Match, easy. Like everybody is saying, there isn't going to be an RFA offer sheet that the Habs fail to match. With term limits now, and the compensation being relatively low, it's just not an avenue worth discussing.
If the Habs can't sign Subban, obviously it will come to a trade. That's the only place it can really go that would actually see Subban change teams.
I'd definitely welcome a 6-year $6.5M/year offer sheet, though. It'd get Subban in the lineup and locked up long-term as a Hab, which I'm all for. But it won't happen, alas.
Meehan must want to set a nice precedent for Pietrangelo's even more monstrous deal by dragging this out so much with Subban.

Again, I have no idea what Subban or the Habs are offering, but if the Habs would easily match a $6.5M/yr deal, why isn't he signed yet?
Ottawa should offer sheet him. 7 yrs, 6.5M. We have the cap space and MTL/OTT are never going to trade anyways so I could care less about BM/MB's relationship. At best we get a top pairing player, at worst MTL now has Subban to a terrible deal. and it creates a rivalry.
If I'm Montreal, I'm not looking for quantity for quality trades (like what some fans are proposing). Subban is a 23 year old, top pairing defenceman (arguably a #1). You don't trade talent like that for an average NHLer, a good prospect, and a couple of picks. You do trades like Subban + for Benn, or Subban for Yakupov, or Subban for a high end prospect +. Trades that get high end talent back in exchange for high end talent.

If it's a terrible deal, why is Ottawa offering it?

Because that's not the ideal situation.
The Habs want Subban to sign a 2 year "transition" deal, much like the deals that Price and Pacioretty signed before their long-term extensions.
But if Subban signed an offer sheet and the choice was matching that longterm deal or losing Subban for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd i'm certain the Habs would match.
I'd pay $10 for a slice of pizza, but I'll try my best to deal it at $2.
Understood, but with the season already started, and the Habs feeling the pain of not having him in the line-up, the time for nickel & dime'ing has passed.

7 x 6.5M = 45.5M
45.5M / 5 = 9.1M
9.1M > 8M , therefore the compensation is 4 1st round picks.
If I am running the Flyers(which pretty clearly I am not) I woud center my offer around Voracek. He is a fine young player who has potential to be a 1st line winger. Right now he is more of a second line play making winger though. We could add, but you are not going to get a boatload on top of it.
It's a shame that it is coming down to this though, Subban is a great player, and there should be some middle ground the two sides can agree on... Amazing they are still this far apart.
