-A poll as to who gets the chance to be #1 between the two would likely heavily outfavour Reimer over Scrivens, but polls can be misleading.
-They could co-exist as an effective tandem, defying many who say you need a definitive #1
-Or one stays as the backup, and the other goes elsewhere, making room for the new #1 through a trade or free agency (unless Rynnas or Owuya come out of nowhere)
But finding that true #1 never comes easy for the Toronto Maple Leafs
Randy Carlyle isn't favouring Reimer over Scrivens at this juncture. largely due to conditioning.
So it's Scrivens' big chance to show the organization what he is or isn't capable of as he gets a few more starts in the early going than expected.

why for how much longer? you mean Ben is going to get mad and stop talking to James because James plays the majority of the games? or their wives are going to stop talking to each other?
they are professionals. I'm sure Ben realizes what his role is going to be and is happy to get the games he's getting.

These are good goalies. If the leafs defense continues to limit the high quality scoring chances, then run them both until both demand big bucks. When that happens dish off the #2 to the highest bidder.
I said it already, if Reimer and Scrivens give the leafs average goal tending this year then we make the playoffs.
So far in this small sample size, Reimer has looked better in his one game than Scrivens did in the previous two. Before anyone throws out numbers at me, here's what I've been watching:
-Blocking angles, this was a problem with Reimer, he would stay too deep in his net and not come out to take the angles, but he showed that he is over that yesterday
-Lateral movement: Scrivens scares me every-time the opposing forward has the puck behind our net, he is just so slow to react to any sort of wrap-around play. Reimer looked good yesterday in that regard, except for that one freak play where everyone lost track of the puck and it was shot right into his pad
-Quality of competition: Reimer made some big saves against the most deadly offensive lineup in the NHL. He was scored on from a bad angle by Malkin, and a breakaway by Crosby, which is understandable. Scrivens didn't have to do much for the W against the Habs who were completely shut down. And against Buffalo, I felt that he looked shaky.
There are unscientific observations I've made in the 3 games so far. Reimer will be the man once the rust shakes off IMO. But Scrivens will still see many starts on back-to-backs to keep them both fresh.
Carlyle is going to play both,and asks the team to support them defensively in a condensed 48 gamer,with tough stretches in a team concept. Just win a majority of your starts ,and i could care less who starts.
It will be game time decision to game time decision apparently.
Just platoon them until one clearly establishes himself. The Islanders did pretty well in the late '70s and early '80s with both Chico Resch and Billy Smith.
Scrivens is more athletic and has had good numbers in every league he's played in. I honestly feel both goalies are a solid 1b but Scrivens has potential to become a 1a goalie

his biggest weakness right now is rebound control. good teams will eat him up if he doesn't get that under control.
2 goalies with elite track records at every level, save for Reimer's injured year last year.
either one might turn into a legit #1 nhl goalie, and if Carlyle uses a legit smart tandem this year, both of them might put up some very pretty numbers in a non-fulltime role (like, say, the Elliot/Halak tandem in STL last year).
Why do we have to find out now? Yes it's a short schedule but it is also heavily condensed so if we don't have to rely on one guy heavily, it makes our weak goaltending less of an achilles heel. When other teams will be forcing their guy to play in back to back and 3 games in 5 night situations.
I don't see either causing a stir; Scrivens is already halfway to matching his career high in NHL games so a season as the backup would be an improvement for him Reimer lost his starting job last year and sat on the bench wile Gustafsson was less than stellar and didn't seem to whine about it. And you do get the sense that if neither outplays the other, they'd lean to Reimer due to the experience and salary factor.

because one might get dealt away or scrivens gets farmed if they trade for a #1
I'm not sold on scrivens' glove hand, but I think it's worth nothing that aside from a 7 goal beatdown at the hands of the Bruins in one of the first games of his career, Scrivens has posted a .918sv% so far in his career.

he also has less potential than Reimer IMO
Reimer isn't as talented as Scrivens. I couldn't count how many times Reimer lost track of the puck yesterday. He was extremely lucky he was in good position on 5-6 saves.
Scrivens has been better than Reimer is whole career. Don't know how you could say Reimer has more potential than Scrivens because he doesn't.
