If he's your #1D, you're not sniffing a cup.
Dion looked really good tonight against two of the NHL's best players. His defensive game is extremely underated.

Leafs don't have a Norris winner like Karlsson, but Rielly (sp?) could be really, really good and Gardiner is quite solid, so nice depth to the Leafs there.

IF Spezza re-signs (He should, but if Alfie keeps playing how long does he want to wait to become our captain...would suck if he walks!) then we have a fairly good though diminishing #1 centre, as he'll be 30 soon and might be 33-35 by the time the team hits the 100-110 point plateau with consistency.

Silfverberg looks ok so far. I'm not seeing he Hall of Fame level/Alfredsson level play yet but that may come in time. Zibanejad seems pretty concussion/injury-prone so we'll see. Leafs have some nice forwards too; Kadri has great hands, Leivo, Frattin, D'Amigo, Colborne could all surprise.

One thing that could work in the Leafs favour is that their core group is quite young compared to ours. Alfie is gonna retire in a year or two, so will Phillips, Gonchar is going to leave, Michalek is not "young" but not "old" either. Our team really looks to be in a transition phase. I'm kinda jittery about what happens when those vets clear out.

I gave the edge to the Leafs later since if we continue our upward trend we'll get less "good" prospects while the Leafs "D" with Rielly, Gardiner, Phaneuf, Kostka (sp?) looks pretty good. We have Karlsson and Cowen (severly injured atm) then a lot of decent pluggers...Wiercioch a first pairing "D"? Not yet. We'll see I guess. We have a deep pool of prospects that we can turn into "warm bodies", which isn't bad at all.

At the moment our NHL-ready group beats theirs and prospects are prospects, we'll see.

It could look like this

Even without Jones that is excellent stuff.
Imagine Ottawa with someone like Jones.

Cowen - Karlsson
Jones - Weircoich
Methot - Ceci
Claesson/Borowiecki/Gryba

Teams look better when you add in a good prospect.

If Ottawa is bad enough to get Jones, I prolly won't think that highly of the other players on that roster.

The Leafs are pretty hard to gauge. I feel as though Ron Wilson really handicapped them for the last few seasons. With a decent defensive system in place I think we'll see the Leafs give up a lot fewer goals against, the thing that's hurt them so badly in recent years.

I can give a more confident answer one way or the other in a couple months.

No offense, but your analysis of the Leafs forward prospects is suspect. Kadri looks like a keeper, but the rest of the ones you named are quite a bit less impressive than their counterparts in Ottawa. You also forgot Biggs, who is quite possibly the second best after Kadri.

You picked up on that, but not the fact he's got 27 year old UFA-to-be Mike Kostka as an important part of the Leafs' future?

I think the Leafs will do better than the Senators for this year due to the fact that their D outside of Karlsson is pretty thin...

Future, probably the sens... although it's SO hard to predict with prospects. All I know is the Leafs need to improve down the Centre and in net. But their wingers/defense is/will be good for the foreseeable future (minus something major going wrong)

Rielly - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Finn?
Gunnarson - Percy/Blacker/Franson

Really excited for Finn, a Defensive Dman that's around a ppg in the OHL. I think we got a good pick there.

Obviously with Karlsson, Spezza, and Lehner (as long as he pans out) the sens have a good core... Just need to see how their GM complements them. Their Defense could be really good too with Karlsson, Cowen, and Ceci if everything works out.

Their Defense could be really good too with Karlsson, Cowen, and Ceci if everything works out.
lol dude

We've been hearing for years and years that the Leafs have one of the best defense in the league. But they are consistently awful and at the bottom of the league when the games are played.

Gunnarsson

Komisarek

if you say so.

maybe your homer opinion is more meaningful than their actual performance, maybe not.

And we've told all of you again and again it was Ron Wilson's system that was the problem, not the Leafs defense. You know what? They look better in a more defensive system.

Your comparing goalies to forwards, defense to forwards and players not even playing in the same league. Plus points aren't everything.
