I was as surprised as anybody at yesterday's moves, so let's reset:
What we know (pretty much)
-DL has no confidence in Garon; he will not be the #1 goaltender
-Frolov and Brown are seen as tradeable assets
-$22M is a lot of wiggle room
-'Blake to LA' rumors have been non-existent (thank god)
What I think I'm pretty sure of, maybe
-Connie and Matti seem to be cornerstones, based on DL's initial press conference
-They probably see O'Sullivan stepping right into the top 6
-Nobody is going to want Miller or Sopel with their contracts, at least until the trading deadline
-DL didn't seem to see the big need for D prospects that we all assumed was so obvious. Not sure what this means.
What we don't know
-A complete 3-year overhaul, or a Burke-like on-the-fly rebuild?
-What is Kopitar's projected role (in DL and MC's eyes)?
-Are we in the Pronger sweepstakes? Elias? Chara?
-Who are some of the 2nd & 3rd tier FA's that DL will go after? Samsonov? McCauley? Peca? Carney?
-Are we likely to see some of Crawford's old players? Morrison?
My opinion? I think it was a pretty great day yesterday. But the uncertainty about the big picture makes me pretty anxious. I agree that Frolov should be trade bait but not Brown. Rather not see a big-name signing. I'd like to see us go with Garon again. I think the failure of Nabokov/Giguere/Khabibulin/Turco and the success of Ward/Roloson/Bryzgalov/Miller in the playoffs shows that a big-name high-dollar goalie is a bad gamble.
Interested to see what others think are the 'knowns' and the 'unknowns' at this point...
With all due respect, Kearney, you don't "know" that Garon will not be the #1 goaltender. Lombardi has tried to upgrade the position, but there's nothing to suggest that he won't stop until he does. Also, it's not true that Blake-to-L.A. rumors have been "non-existent."
The trade of Tanguay makes it possible for the Avs to re-sign Blake. Money is freed up, and the move was made strategically for that purpose.
Pretty stupid strategy if you ask me. Not only do you trade away a star offensive player who's a decade younger, but you also enable your formerly offensively-inept division rival to have a kick-*** first line.
