Ranger fans are going to want to punch me in the face for this but I think it's worth a shot

Connolly ( Leafs eat half the salary so 2.375 ). FA next yr

for

Rupp ( one yr left a 1.5)

Rangers bring up Haley to replace Rupp on the 4th line and get some secondary scoring unless Connoly continues to stink.

Leafs get rid of a crap contract and they have a tough vet for next yr. Orr is a UFA

Or we could have simply picked up Connolly on waivers and use an amnesty buyout when needed.

why do that? TO will eat some cash no doubt. Save more cap space for the deadline.

Plus who knows if they want to use the 2nd buyout( Redden already used one) on another player

We are talking about the Rangers, no? The team that regularly spent 80 million+ before the salary cap?

Money is not the issue its the Cap hit, Leafs are also loaded so I am sure they would eat half of it for a guy they dont want on the team any longer and are paying almost 5 million too.

1. Can the Rangers afford Connely's cap hit?
2. The Rangers better do something quick. They have ZERO depth since the Nash trade.

Why would the Leafs do that?

Connolly is good depth to have. No one will pick him up at 4.75M anyways, so if there are injuries that occur he can step in and help the Leafs.

His cap hit is gone after this year and the Leafs don't really mind that his cap hit counts against the cap this year.

11M. That's with the normal cap this year though. I could see us going all in this year since our spending power goes down significantly after this season.

you can now Trade 50% of the cap hit. So the Leafs could eat that and then he costs around 2.4 prorated for the rest of the yr

This team his to start playing better before anyone is going to be willing to go all in on them.

Yes, I know.

When I read your post, I thought the Leafs were talking about eating half of a 2.375M salary, not half of a 4.75M salary. So, when I said 'didn't realize anyone could pay Connolly that much', I was commenting on Brian Burke's stewardship of the Leafs, not a lack of understanding on my part of this aspect of the new CBA.

I don't think the leafs take this deal retaining half the salary, nor would the rangers want Connolly. He has talent but floats a lot, torts would eat him alive (though maybe he could help the pp which stunk last night). This team basically needs time, and another pyatt or a prust type, and all will be well.

Not so fast with our remaining amnesty buyout.
If we are really stuck and can't trade him we may need use it on Richards instead of losing several players.

And Connolly is fragile.

I'd rather keep Rupp.
