Actually, it is close. Leopold was far and away our worst defenseman against Philly. I think he even had a worse game than Myers did last night.

Myers, for as bad as he looked last night....and as questionable as he's been with the puck, looked solid positionally and physically against Philly and Toronto.

Myers hasn't performed well....but to say he's been our worst AINEC is hyperbole.

Agree. As a team, how much training camp and preseason games did the players not have this year? Now slide that into the regular season. You get what, 8-9 games?

After Feb. 3rd a more accurate "team" picture will develop. Sure picking out certain players on certain games is normal. But overall team evaluation should wait a few more games. That's what I'll do at least.

He's 22 years old. He's maturing mentally and physically.
I'm not worried that he'll never be as good as when he broke in, but he also had an under appreciated veteran partner to rely on.

I think that when the deal was announced it was generally understood he would likely be overpaid the first few years and then be worth the contract after the 3rd year in.

Myers play down the stretch in 2011 was better than his rookie year, IMO. Last year was his only real regression.

Ruff hasn't developed a defenseman since Campbell, and even he didn't learn how to get out of his own way in his own zone until somewhere between Chicago and Florida. He's the part of this equation I'm worried about.

Absolutely guys have been rusty and need time to get back in to game shape and get accustomed to the speed of the game, but what your ignoring is that Myers has had two disappointing seasons before this year. The fact he's been bad in the first three games is merely an extension of that.

Tallinder wasn't some snakecharmer who could get Myers to settle down. He's just the only mobile, stay at home player Myers has played with in his entire career.

So since his rookie year, he's just struggled the first half of 10-11, last year, and the very short beginning of this season. Isn't it more accurate to say his play down the stretch in 2011 has been the only bright spot?

Lord help us if we just gave $40 million to a defenseman that needs to rely on someone else to not play terribly.

Jesus at this rate its gonna take us more time to get over Tallinder than it did Briere/Drury.

Myers is fine. He was fine last year. You only have to look at our record without him

6-10-4 with Myers out of the lineup last year
33-22-7 with him in the lineup

Case closed. Seriously. It's 3 games. Stop freaking out. Playoff team with him, draft lottery team without him.

That's kinda where my heads at too. I can appreciate the Tallinder talk, I really can. But I always thought if player X isn't all that good unless he plays with player Y, why is player X (overall) a really good player? I understand chemistry and all that, but I mean night and day effectiveness. Overall I think Myers will find his way, get better and be effective. It just may take even more time than some thought.

A franchise defenseman should be effective with any partner. I can buy into an argument that Myers isn't being utilized properly and that's harming his performance, but the fact that he plays downright poorly without a complimentary partner tells me more about Myers than Ruff.

You guys forget... this mistake was made with a 20 yr old

He wasn't a franchise defensemen then... and he's not one now.

What we did to Myers, is EXACTLY what is meant when people are concerned with rushing a player.

There is a difference between :
a) a franchise defensemen being capable of playing with anyone
b) developing a franchise defensemen

I'm pretty sure they had decided he already was a franchise defenseman when they gave home the contract. I don't believe that this was a case of wanting to let him grow into the contract, like they did with Derek Roy. They could have given him a bridge contract, like they did with Ennis, but they threw the moon at him because they believe(d?) he was already there.

I can understand your point. Do you understand mine, when I say... Developing a franchise defensemen isn't always done one way...

..... He plays and develops with only one... ONE defensemen until his diapers are ready to come off.

There has to be countless examples of both ways being effective. (Playing with multiple partners and developing fine. And playing with one and only one partner and developing fine)

Sure maybe Myers is the kind of kid who could only develop into a franchise defenseman by playing with only one partner throughout the developing years. Maybe. But now, he needs to develop without that perfect partner. If he doesn't that's problematic of him, not the coach. Granted the coach is a line juggler that doesn't help much in this regard. Again, I still think he'll develop fine. It just may take a little longer than some are willing to wait :
