The 77-78 Cleveland Barons make quite a few trades during the season, and they acquired six players who had previously been with the franchise as either a Baron or a California Seal: Walt McKechnie, Bob Girard, Fred Ahern, Wayne Merrick, Mike Christie and Ralph Klassen. I'd be surprised if that wasn't a record. It was weird in that all of these players had previously been with the franchise within the last 2 years; it wasn't like they acquired a guy from long ago like Carol Vadnais or Dennis Hextall.
And the Red Wings fans begin to sift through Ken Holland's resume...
Same goes with Canes fans and JR.
06-07 season off the top of my head is a candidate there:
Josef Vasicek (traded and then re-acquired in the same season)
Ryan Bayda (signed as UFA)
David Tanabe (signed as UFA)
Shane Willis (signed as UFA, played in AHL that season)
Jesse Boulerice (signed as UFA, played in AHL that season)
??? They played for the team/franchise previously.
They weren't dealt away in the interim.
Bob Girard was signed by the Golden Seals in 1973 and dealt to Washington for Walt McKechnie in 1977. McKechnie played for the Seals from 1971 to 1974.
Wayne Merrick was acquired by the Seals in 1975 from the Blues for Larry Patey. He was traded to the Islanders with Darcy Regier (yes THAT Darcy Regier) for J.P. Parise and Jean Potvin in 1978.
Mike Christie was traded to the Seals by the Black Hawks in 1974 with Len Frig for Ivan Boldirev. He was traded by the Barons to the Rockies in 1978.
Ralph Klassen was drafted by the Seals in 1975 and dealt away by the Barons to the Rockies with Fred Ahern for Rick Jozdio and Chuck Arnason in January '78.
Technically Fred Ahern was reacquired. He was traded to Colorado in the aforementioned trade with Ralph Klassen then traded back to the Barons for cash in May, after the Barons' season had ended. The Barons and North Stars merged a month later and Ahern never played another game in the NHL.
I don't see a year since the 2005 lockout where Holland has brought more than a couple, but almost every season there is at least one.
2012-13: F Mikael Samuelsson
2011-12: G Ty Conklin, D Kyle Quincey
2010-11: F Jiri Hudler, G Joey MacDonald
2009-10: F Todd Bertuzzi, F Jason Williams
2006-07: G Dominik Hasek
2005-06: G Chris Osgood
I wonder how other teams look in the same regard.
Yup and in the two seasons you didn't list
2007-08: Dallas Drake and Darren McCarty
2008-09: Aaron Downey
Downey is a little tricker and really stretching things. But he was invited to Phoenix's camp that year and was cut. Then he played with the Griffins and eventually the Wings for a very short stint. Since he played the year before for them and really only suited up for their AHL affiliate that is stretching things. But if you want you can say every year since the lockout.
