The farther Washington, Tampa, and Philly fall behind in this shortened season the quicker they'll be willing to give up. For those teams they have FAR too much invested in NOW to wait...
I'm going to be really interested in what Philly does if they continue on their slide.
As Tim Robbins said in Shawshank: "Hope, it might be the greatest thing...". Luongo gives you hope AND a brilliant mentor for the talented Holtby when he takes over. Look what he did for Schneider.
Leafs need a cup... not hope. I really don't think you mean it this way but I find it extremely condescending for other teams fans to pander Leaf fans about making the playoffs like it will be our stanley cup.
A LOT of talk around Luongo have had that sort of remark and it ridiculous.

You think Leaf fans of all hockey fans would have thicker skin... the thing with the playoffs is once you get in ANYTHING can happen and with Luongo in net he could get you a few rounds. The Leafs have proven to be pretty resilient and gritty over the past few years... those attributes with a great goalie could get you far.
Anyhow... Nucks want nothing from the Leafs. REALLY wish Bud fans would just walk away and stop making everything about them...
The major reason for TOR to trade for Lu is to _make_the_playoffs_. That's the immediate agenda. Whether the Leafs would treat it as a great achievement after being out for something like 10 years, it's secondary to the point: He would help them greatly in getting there. _Greatly_.
The cup is irrelevant if you can't make the playoffs first. I always got a chuckle out of Burke's diatribe on that aspect of team building. Not building to make the playoffs and get bounced in the 1st round... Well Burkie, that's a great achievement in of itself. Making the playoffs is very difficult in of itself. So the goal should be to take steps to get there first, and then talk about the cup later... One would think.

You'd think the embarrassment of being the ONLY team since the last lock-out NOT to make the playoffs would be enough.
I would counter by saying that Gillis is going to trade Roberto Luongo not because he thinks Schneider is better, but because he thinks Schneider _could_ be better in a short time AND provide the Cancuks with a player who can help them compete for the cup beyond the shelf life of Luongo.
I think in essence that is why most Vancouver fans want a young quality player++ in return for Luongo because they also realize that such a player would be helpful for them long term... perhaps past the shelf life of the Sedins.
It is that very type of forethought that it seems you are suggesting the Leafs should _ignore_ so they can _pay up_ and try to make the playoffs with an aging Luongo.
Also you're not going to get any top prospect from Washington, Chicago, obviously Toronto, or whoever trades for him, go and ask Hawk fans if they want to give up Leddy or Teravainen. Ask Washington fans if they want to give up kuznetsov or forsberg..answer is pretty obvious
Well as long as the fans on here say it, it must be true.
That blowout by schneider seems ages away now, he was a rock in the last two games.
Tick Tock on the luongo clock
BOOOOOOM!
Goaltending trouble in Vancouver? GTFO haters. Schneids has a .970 save % since getting pulled in opening night, and posts a shutout on the road tonight.

People are acting like we want to send him to TOR, like we want to push Lu there, why? What difference does it make for Canucks fans where Lu ends up? He could go to another team, and it wouldn't make a lick of difference.
You don't want to try to make the playoffs? Cool. Move on. Done. On to the next. No hard feelings.
Gillis wants good roster player + good prospect + 1st. Why? Trade a star player for a few lesser assets. It's how trades go. Could be any team involved, Gillis will try to shoot for that package. Now, if some team were to give him an equal quality vet in return, say like a Shane Doan, that's an easy hockey trade. But most teams don't have that, so you ask for the package. All this is, is recognizing that you will not get an equal quality asset in return for Luongo. That's just the reality of the situation.

He looked solid tonight. Must feel good to get some revenge on the Ducks too.

Many fans dont consider the economic realities nor do they consider the players careers. They think its some kind of VIDEO GAME for their amusement.
Every year you 'tank' is another year off the players already short time in the NHL . They arent here to make some future version of the Leafs get all the glory. They want to win too.
And its not just that. What about all the people who pay tens of THOUSANDS of dollars for season tickets . What do you say to them?
.....hey guys, cough up tens of thousands , but we arent going to try to win we are 'tanking' for future seasons. But hey . please pay up in the meantime so kids at home can have a good team 5 or 10 years from now............
What do you say to the coaches who get FIRED ? What do you say to the GM who got fired ?
No way we cough up anything for a goalie to get us to the playoffs. We gotta TANK for Seth Jones you know. I know Phil Kessel LOVES wasting his career so the leafs can get Mc Kinnon.
Some fans dont think about this. Again, they think its some kind of video game where they should win LOPSIDED trades or nothing. Get way more than give. Gimmie gimmie gimmie .
I am really glad the NHL now has it where all 14 teams can get the first pick. Encourage teams to ice the best team they can , and still get a great draft pick.

No goalie is ever going to fetch that.
Good roster player, good prospect and a 1st?
Mike Richards fetched Schenn, Simmonds, and a 2nd. Luongo has no business fetching as much as Richards.
If that's the asking price, Luongo might want to purchase a place in Vancouver if he hasn't already, because no one is paying that.

...sigh...
When the Leafs walk away; Luongo is a Canuck for the next decade. Don't kid yourselves with Gillis pretending there is a "mystery team". Then constantly crying and whining with remarks directly aimed at once single team.
Nonis is not budging; Gillis is asking for too much with no market for his asset. It's only a matter of time.
Either way, the Leafs are not as desperate as Vancouver. We're fine developing our youth and adding quality picks. Vancouver is hitting retirement; has empty cupboards; along with shooting themselves in the foot with a horrible decade long contract.
Trust me; we have thick skin. That doesn't shield stupidity.

If you ignore the bad games; you can make any player look good.
I'm just curious, say by some miracle, Luongo isn't traded and he stays in Vancouver until he retires. How does one go about calculating the cap penalty for such a venture?
I know it would be around 2M per year for about 2-3 years for Vancouver and whomever acquires him. So it is safe to assume that it would be 4M for about 3 years cap penalty?

how are the Canucks desperate? this is the same team that made the finals...
The canucks have no shortage of nhl-ready bodies...so any proposals where Luongo gets shipped off for a package of spare parts will simply not happen. If anything Gillis will be looking to pair Luongo with another roster player to upgrade.
I said Ashton , Colbourne and an unprotected 1st in 2014 is a fair deal for both the Canucks and Leafs.
Canucks could use a third line center right now , but this deal provides a good transition from a Sedin based team to a team that will still be good.
Ashton, Colborne and the 1st?
The only problem Leaf fans would have with that is the 1st. Gillis is clearly demanding more than that, otherwise Luongo would be playing for the Leafs against the Rangers this Saturday night.
He's definitely demanding Kadri++ for Luongo but you would have to understand that it is not going to happen.
Kadri has a solid chance to be a 60-65 point #2C for the Leafs. If the Leafs were unwilling to trade him when Ron Wilson bounced him like a yo-yo, there is zero chance the Leafs trade him now that he's finally showing signs of breaking out under Carlyle.

I have to admit they look good. Kassian is looking solid and the Sedins can carry anyone. Canucks should just go for it all this year. Keep LU and deal with it in the summer. It might be uglier then but you might be Stanley Cup Champions too.
