I seriously wonder if the people who say they truly hate him regularly watch CBC broadcasts.. i.e. are they basing it on just the extreme clips that go viral?
Because between the segments that go viral are dozens of weekly Ron and Don segments that are excellent HOCKEY-based segments... primarily entertaining and always ending in a great eye roll to a McLean pun...
It's been a fantastic piece of the HNiC experience for me for 25ish yrs...
That extreme aspect of Cherry (that's so polarizing) is such a minor piece of what makes up the whole pie that is Donald S. Cherry.. Let's be reality here. Yolo!
He makes me laugh because I don't take him seriously. **** up cold war era nostalgic.

I would laugh and think he's funny if everyone just treated him as a troll, but unfortunately, he still has quite a bit of influence in the hockey world.
Love him. More misunderstood than any Canadian alive today. But that's fine, those that get him are in on it and don't care what everyone else really thinks.
One thing I really hate about all topics regarding Cherry are the ignorant comments made about his age.
"He's an old dinosaur", etc.
To me, this is as bad as racism or commenting on a guy's religion.
One, Cherry has basically the same opinions now as when he was 30 (in fact he may be more liberal now).
Second, making disparaging remarks about a man because of his age is a slippery slope. When does that start? Maybe some people here think I am a dinosaur at age 42, but I would bet my life on the fact that I have forgotten more about hockey this morning than a lot of the posters on this board have learned in their entire lives.
he's an old guy with a bunch of objective views that get 10-20 minutes of TV time a week. He can say anything and everything because of his status in the hockey industry and unlike other "reporters," goes out of his way to choose one side over the other. Cherry gets his employer the publicity and impressions that they need.
i have no problem with don cherry
I also have no problem with people who don't like Cherry. They're just evidence that he's good at filling the role that CBC needs him to. What CBC needs to do is what ESPN does with Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. Find a common enemy between Cherry and the people who don't like Cherry and put them on a 30 minute show every Wednesday... first name that comes to mind is Milbury
even when HNIC has a game that I would rather miss, I tune in to watch Coach's Corner...Love the Don!!!
NHIC without Cherry is like cake without icing. still have the substance, but none of the pizazz and aesthetically pleasing qualities.
