Teams Interested in Brent Sopel

per Craig Custance

Couple teams looking for D have inquired about Brent Sopel, playing in the KHL (10 pts in 45 games). Shot-blocker, won Cup w/Blackhawks.
and per Dmitri Chesnokov in response to the news

...and his team is in the permanent fire sale mode

Yeah, don't think it would be too hard to get him to North America.
I was just noting the other day (for another project I have on the go) that he went from playing 22 games in the playoffs for the Stanley Cup champions, to being a sought-after deadline acquisition the next year (MTL gave up a 4th round pick and prospect for him) who played in all 7 of Montreal's playoff games to the KHL and no talk of him returning, which isn't unusual for European players but is for North Americans. I guess the dearth of quality defencemen has people looking for unconventional solutions. Plus, there are no restrictions on signing players from Europe and needing to put them on waivers for this season, to my knowledge.

I cant imagine him playing in NHL at this point

He was so slow at end of his time in NHL

Very happy for what Catfish did for Hawks but man was he brutal at times (Stepped it up in playoffs but in regular season we wanted to run him out of Chicago)

He was the recipient of the majority of bad defenseman jokes here in Vancouver. And that was 10 years ago.

Wouldn't he have to clear waivers?

Don't think he's getting past the Islanders

That's not how the waiver wire works for the first part of the season.

I don't know how they changed the dates but from october until november 1st, it's by the previous season's record

Islanders were much worse

I'm pretty sure waivers for signed players out of Europe are not in effect for 2013. I know a Rangers beat writer confirmed that if Mats Zuccarello were to return from the KHL and join the Rangers, he would not have to clear waivers. I think this is for the shortened season.

Makes sense....otherwise ROR wouldn't be able to play with Colorado even if he signed (since there's no chance he passes waivers).

During his stint with the Habs he was ok on the PK but other than that he was completly washed up.

Is that (and ROR's situation) related to the prior club still owning the rights to the player (via restricted free agency) as opposed to a player like Sopel, who is unrestricted? I think if you own the rights to the player, waivers are not required.

He was horrible three years ago. It'd be laughable watching him play.
