I think you are the only person on this site who believes Giroux is a top 5 player. Top 10 maybe, but top 5? no way!

It would be nice to see more GMs taking this kind of stance so that we don't have another lockout.

I think a compromise will be had somewhere. I'm guessing 5 year 5M/year or 4 year 4.5M/year. Something like that. If its a 8 year deal then i can see 6M/year.
Lockouts don't happen because the best players are slightly overpaid. Lockouts happen when too many mediocre players are paid like they're great players. If the Habs are that serious about his potential and talent, then they'll sign him to the contract that would be fit. It seems like they either don't think he's as good as others do, or they're taking an unnecessarily ridiculous hard-line approach.

Habs have got to get rid of this ridiculous bridge deal policy. Does any other team in the league lowball all RFAs?

As a neutral fan of a team with a similar player (Bogosian) if he asked for 5x5 deal next year I'd do it in a second.

Subbans a 30-40 dman in the league right now and he plays #1 minutes for his team. Bridge deals should only be for when a player is more potential than proven. Subbans basement is a top pairing defender. Pay the man.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger

Little or no progress made in PK Subban contract negotiations. Habs firm on 2 year deal, roughly $5 mil total. Offer sheet? Trade? Options.

anything to say now?

As dynamic as PK? You're right.

But players as good as PK do come around quite often.

A list of 2008 draft picks that are either better than, as good as or comparable to Subban...

Alex Pietrangelo
Drew Doughty
Tyler Myers
Erik Karlsson
Jake Gardiner
John Carlson
Justin Schultz

That's from one draft.

I'm sure Philadelphia would love Subban but the only way you're getting Claude Giroux is if Carey Price is going the other way, with Subban.

They are taking a hardline approach out of principal i think but until the facts are known its hard to say who is being ridiculous here. Maybe both are. Maybe the Habs want 2M/year and Subban wants 12M/year. Who knows.

But the fact of the matter is that Subban is a RFA. He doesn't have a lot of leverage and offersheets are very unlikely at this stage given the cap reductions.

Is Darren Dreger not considered a reliable source now?

EDIT: TML Gunners posted the tweet. Point still stands

He's speculating at best. If he wasn't speculating he would have disclosed his source. Both Don Meehan and Marc Bergevin have stated that they do not discuss salary negotiations with the media. Last i checked Daren Dreger is the media.

I don't buy that with amnesty buyouts being available.

If Subban gets through this season un-signed he will be hounded with offers.

Wow!!! That's a pretty hardline stance from MB. Should Habs continue doing well, the odds clearly favor the Canadiens. Hope it works out for them.

I don't think that's what anyone is saying. Dreger is one of the better ones but even he has been wrong many, many, times. The point was that none of us know what the actual numbers are. Dreger included.

How am i ridiculous? If both the Habs GM and PK's agent state that they do not share info on salary negotiations with the media then what makes you think Daren Dreger has the inside scoop? Believing Dreger is comical.

Well of course he could be wrong, but give me a break. He would not be tweeting it if it was not remotely true.

When was the last time Bob McKenzie disclosed his sources?

When was the last time an agent or GM disclosed sensitive salary negotiations information to the media after saying that they wouldn't?
