I like the idea of WestJet picking it up. It makes sense on plenty of levels and "WestJet Centre" doesn't sound too bad.
Why wouldn't Katz just get Rexall on it though? I'm guessing he's locked into an agreement at current Rexall Place for several years still. Otherwise "Rexall Arena" or even "New Rexall Place" don't seem too bad.
Because Katz owns Rexall, so he'd be passing up a revenue stream that likely totals around $3M a year. I'm sure he'll have Rexall plastered throughout the arena, so the name won't be crucial. Right now, it still works as good marketing for him since he doesn't own Rexall Place.
I'd be down for WestJet, but they're HQd in Calgary, wonder if they'd dare come here.
With the arena being this fancy, and Katz a decent businessman, would be cool to see a major international company (Barclays, O2 types) stake a claim here.
Are you serious with this. Mastermaq is a highly respected blogger and source that has deep involvement with EEDC, City Council, is widely quoted on C2E, by journalists,is widely cited by Edmonton business community, leaders, etc. and has lead many downtown events.
This is not some random blogger. This is the biggest Edmonton proponent bar none. A guy that could run for City Hall on his basis of work and win on reputation.
jebus get out there a little if you haven't heard of this guy.
Go to C2E and ask how respected a source mastermaq is.
Maybe I have missed something? I have followed the Oilers and absorbed every drop of opinion, speculation, blogging and forum i can find. This is the first time I have ever seen this name appear.
You forgot the IMO here Replacement...and please tell us - where are we headed?
Yeah, Brilliant!!! Please message me this weeks lottery numbers and next weeks stock futures? Also, the exact day I will leave this world so I can take care of people that have screwed me around through out the years..... I have an ex wife...... Lol, Kidding of course...
Seattle my ***, I hope that city never gets a NHL team.
Thank you Gary!
Actually, it would be a blessing for the Oilers and everybody else in the west if Seattle got a team for a few reasons...
-another fairly local rivalry
-the league could go ahead with realignment (if its an expansion team), which would be fantastic for the western teams, 3pt games would be minimized and you only have to be better than 4 teams to make the playoffs instead of 8, plus divisional playoffs which would create much better rivalries
Ok, forgive me. I'm not trying to troll here or start fights.
But my parents are saying they heard on Global News EDM an hour so ago that the new arena still might not be happening.
They're saying they heard a city counselor saying that $100,000,000 are still missing and the province isn't going to pay it. Something like that.
Yes, my parents very well may have misunderstood and be complete *******. But I'm posting this here because I'm confused and I thought I'd inform everyone just in case. I have no citations... I'm looking for further information.
And yep, if I'm wrong, you have my permission to insult my parents.
