Why do that with stellar, proven, playoff defensive options like Ben Lovejoy available? And, don't forget, with Engo's Norris caliber play to date this season, it really doesn't matter who the other defenseman is.

If the Pens are taking the games this season like every set is a 7 game series (which is what I heard Errey say I believe), then a loss tonight would mean we just experienced another 1st round exit.

Is it too much to hope for that the Lovejoy-Engelland pairing as a whole is sitting, and they are being replaced by Despres-Bortuzzo?

Never mind, I think I can figure out my answer.

My calculations might be wrong but wouldn't a loss put us 1 game from elimination?

Not sure where to put this, but Benn Ferrari played for the Rags last night and apparently had a pretty good game.

Well, in defense of the Pens organization, the Rangers have a lot more holes up front than the Pens do.

Seriously, when will Bortuzzo get his shot? Maybe when they waive him next?

Well guys, I attempted to go meet him. Got to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, paid $10 for parking, walked in the front door with a sign that said "Shawn Michaels Autograph Line is closed", the guy was explaining that there were a couple thousand people already there and they cut it off at that point.

No big deal though, I tried.

There has to be something going on with Despres besides play. He couldn't possibly be benched longer for a game because of consistency.

Maybe a trade?

Nope. Just a coach who blames young players for his short comings.

That sucks. I guess HBK is pretty popular in the Burgh.

You don't sit Despres. You just don't. Either play the kid, or get him back to the AHL. Sitting him does nothing positive for his development, and he is a player who is set to be in our top-4 for the future. Do not continually waste his development time, Dan.

I agree but it's only been a couple games. He shouldn't go longer than a week without playing though. It does make me wonder if they are really shopping him and don't want to risk him getting hurt in the minors.

Well what makes it worse is that they kept him on the big squad at the expense of another young defender in Strait. If they weren't planning on playing Despres at least consistently, let alone giving him decent minutes, they should have sent him back down and not lost anybody for nothing.

Strait may not be anything special, but he's a steady defender which is more than can be said about Lovejoy, and losing him for nothing is bad asset management.

I would guess that Despres is sitting to observe. Right now having him or Lovejoy in the lineup isn't going to make much difference.

He's still with the team, practicing with the team, etc. He'll get his turn.

I couldn't possibly disagree more. Lovejoy is horrible in his own end.

Well, that would help to explain how you value the relative merits of fourth line talents.

Considering neither would get many minutes, not a big loss.

And, frankly, it doesn't even matter how Lovejoy is. He is NOT a playoff caliber defenseman, period. Despres COULD be. I thought that was the premise of keeping him up. Let him go through the growing pains NOW, so you can see if there's a reward there in April or if upgrading the defense is a bigger deadline priority.

IMO, the same goes for Bortuzzo and Englland. Englland is sort of passable as a playoff #6. Bortuzzo COULD be more than that.

That really was the same reason to keep Bennett and give him a run.

You'll think otherwise when the playoffs come and the coaching staff believes that guys like Engo and Lovejoy are options because the young guys have 'too little playing experience'.

Did you watch the game on Friday and see how many giveaways Lovejoy had? I'd say it's a lot bigger of a loss than you're insinuating.

Thank you. We've seen that fish before the past two seasons.

I don't know. Anyone can have a bad game. And, don't forget how much having a guy like Lovejoy to rely on has meant the past two playoffs. Not sure how much more Despres or Bortuzzo could give this time around.

And that's why I was so encouraged when Despres stuck. Silly me . . .
