Yea. The guy who at age 19 scored more points than any of Kessels seasons with the exception of last season when he was 24.. Isnt nearly worth Kessel, they have to add a early to mid-1st in a very deep draft....
Not to mention he's a centre, and centres are more valuable than wingers.
JVR would cost them ROR alone, IMO. But the problem is we need to keep guys like Kessel and JVR to play with the centre we get coming back. If we don't, we're spinning our wheels trying to trade guys like Frattin, Mac, Bozak and Kulemin for wingers that can score. We swap one problem for another.
If we do Kulemin, Franson and a 2nd for ROR, where does Bozak play?

If we don't send a C when getting one, we're logjammed, and a deal only makes sense if a team is willing to take back a Centre in return, which is rather counter-productive for most teams (unless you are Colorado and can't sign the guy).
I could definitely see Bozak being of interest. Local hero in Denver, as he played for the University of Denver pioneers. Perfect fit as a third line center behind Duchene and Statsny.
The plus would have to be quite substantial, as O'Reilly has so much more potential. I would imagine they would as for our 1st rounder back with Bozak, but you know that Nonis would never trade it. If we counter with a second rounder, and give them someone like Blacker or Percy, they might bite.
Leafs can't make the playoffs with Phaneuf & Kessel being our top 2 players it's time to move these 2 in a trade for rebuilding blocks. Phaneuf is not a good captain look at last years epic collapse with this guy as the teams leader and now we are seeing signs of being the exact same team again folding in games whenever the opposition continually pressures our defense. In fact it is the same team. I also don't want to have a captain leading the team that turtles when challenged skates to the bench then chirps. Trade Phaneuf at the deadline for a pick or prospects get whatever we can to whatever team that will take his contract.
Contending teams will be interested in trading a pick or prospects for Kessel. Kessel would be a good addition piece to a contender he is not the 2 way centreman forward scorer that we need to rebuild. Trade Kessel now before he walks in FA and we get nothing in return for the enormous price paid for him by Burke.
Leafs need a proper rebuild and we have to start by stock piling picks and prospects. The draft is fairly deep this year we could also trade Phaneuf and Kessel for picks and position to draft a potential #1 goalie or #1 centerman.
More scuttlebutt from HB about the need around the league for defensive help. Seeing as how we have a glut of defensive depth, we could really cash in on the sellers market.
IMO all our D save Gardiner should be available for the right price.
My hope is that we could target deals like the Pittsburgh / Dallas deal that sent a top-4 D to Dallas in return for a top-6 D and a top-6 forward.
Gotta love how everyone panics after a few bad games. Dion's been better than Phil this year, but just because there aren't enough good pieces surrounding them, doesn't mean you get rid of them. When you play in your zone the whole night, the D is eventually going to get worn down, particularly by the size and talent of the Rangers top line. This isn't Dion's fault that the offence couldn't get the puck in the Rangers zone, or keep it there for sustained periods.
Look, our team just isn't good enough yet to compete against the big boys. We've got some nice pieces, Kadri has been playing great, and that is a good sign for the future. We've seen good things out of JvR, Lupul, Kadri, Grabovski, Kulemin, Komarov... Bozak has played well for who he is, can't really fault him for effort. However, Bozak isn't a legit #1C.
With Lupul out, and a lack of a #1C, we are too easy to shut down right now.
I know it isn't fun watching our Leafs get beaten like that, but I really don't know how people expected things to be any different this year. A couple of good results and all of the sudden people forget the team we actually have.
...and really, Mike Kotska as a #2 D? No disrespect to the guy, he's playing his heart out, but it looks like a tank move.

Had a decent world juniors, though Finland as a whole disappointed. The son of a local hero is dealing with an incredible amount of hype back home, but is still putting up points and his big frame makes him an enviable asset for the future.

As part of a young Swedish team that surprised the WJC in earning a silver medal, Lindholm backed up his stature as a two-way player who can really contribute. He showed great hands in Russia and a commitment to defense.
6. Sean Monahan, C, Ottawa
With the 67’s stripping themselves down for a rebuild, Monahan is pretty much on his own for the rest of the season. That may hurt his stats (and definitely his plus-minus), but at his core he’s still an intelligent player with a great frame and excellent offensive capabilities.
7. Robert Hagg, D, Modo
Another breakout player at the world juniors, Hagg was a late injury replacement for the Swedes, but ended up playing an integral shutdown role on the blueline, taking on Nail Yakupov head-to-head. On top of defensive prowess, Hagg can also rush the puck with ease.
8. Rasmus Ristolainen, D, TPS
Surrounded by locked-out NHLers before heading to the world juniors, the big Finnish kid gained valuable experience in his nation’s top league. In Russia, he was surly without being careless and proved himself to be a threat at both ends of the ice.
9. Hunter Shinkaruk, LW, Medicine Hat
Points machine on a middling Tigers team has a mid-sized frame, but his speed is his main gift. Paired with that explosiveness, Shinkaruk also has great offensive skills and with time he has the character to become a more complete player.
10. Adam Erne, RW, Quebec
The points kept coming even without Mikhail Grigorenko around and Erne is now the Remparts’ leading scorer. A power forward in the making, Erne is getting great direction from Patrick Roy in Quebec and he’s not afraid to mix it up in the corners.

I don't dispute this in the least.
However goalies take a LONG time to develop.
Schneider is just pushing out Luongo, drafted in 2004.
Markstrom is the great hope in Florida, not there yet, drafted in 2008.
It is a sound practice to build your pipeline of goalies, but I don't believe any drafted goalie will be able to help this team in the next five-six years.

I don't dispute that these are compliment pieces. Phaneuf is overpaid for what he brings, no question. It's not the frustration that is the biggest issue, it's the over reaction. Fans always want to make a trade, to fix things now somehow. Somehow people didn't see this type of play coming?
While I would agree that the amount of points is no better than the pre-Burke period, I do believe we have started to build a foundation of decent young players and prospects. Hopefully we can draft one more excellent piece this year, and pick up some critical UFA's. It has been apparent for several years that this team was setup for this upcoming UFA season.

Where did you hear that (Kessel valuation), the HF boards trade rumour thread? Because you know, that's where GM's look for trade values. Before every trade they secretly make a "Value of" thread just to see what the all knowing posters of HF boards think of a particular deal.
Kessel is an elite winger. Phaneuf is a very good dman. We need to add to these guys.
Time to quite overpaying 2nd liners like Grabo, CMac. Trade both of them.
If we can good value for Liles and Komisarek trade them. Not likely though so they probably stay.
Trade Franson cause his skillset is redundant here.
Trade Bozak and Gunnarson if they want significant raises.
Build around Kessel, Lupul, JVR, Kadri, Rielly, Phaneuf, Gardiner and our 1st rounder. Have lots of extra picks in a good draft and loads of cap room in a good free agency group.
This team isn`t as far away as people think. We`ve got some nice pieces but we need to add 2-3 more core pieces and just give our youngs guy like Gardiner, Rielly, Kadri a bit more time. Add in a top 5 or 10 pick and a key free agent plus stocking up on lots of extra picks in a deep draft is the way to build this team up for years to come.

Look, I've got no issue with trading Phaneuf, or Kessel, but I'm not a proponent of shopping them because we "need" to get rid of them. If someone offered us a package that would likely improve the future of our team, then we would have to take a good look at it. I just doubt there are such trades available.
