And even if it proves to be true, who cares? Torts will dump him in less time than Cindy needs to take a dive and he'll be eating nachos or playing in Hartford.

We have the cap space and the flexibility to make this move, and still have plenty of options if it shouldn't work out.

Not saying he shouldn't play but please stop putting him on the 2nd and 3rd lines. He is a 4th line player.
17 goals is 6 more than Brian Boyle scored, who everyone constantly rags on for being a black hole on offense. If he can play well on the PP that'd be fantastic, but a lot of guys have come here to find that they don't thrive on this PP unit like the did on other units. I wouldn't bet that he's going to have the same success here.

I'm not saying that Ferriero will provide the scoring that Arnott provided for a different team last year, but I also wouldn't say that Arnott himself will be able to provide that here this year. Ferriero brings hustle and energy, which is what this team needs to get them out of their funk. I'm not putting him anywhere in any lineups but to say he's a 4th line player only based on last night's performance is a bit silly. I'm sure he could fit in just fine on the 3rd line if he keeps up the play he showed last night. People are way too quick to slot players into very specific spots around here. Before he even stepped on the ice people were ragging on the idea of him being on the third line and he ended up moving up a line, playing center and having a solid game.

With Nash, Richards, Gaborik, Stepan and Callahan, and hopefully some progression from Hagelin and continued success from DZ, another player who might be able to put up 30 points isn't what this team needs most. They need hustle, grit and energy to get them on the right track and to get the offense clicking. There's a lot of scoring talent on the ice when they play, it's just not showing because the team as a whole is out of whack right now.

Again, I'm not opposed to Arnott, but I wouldn't scratch Ferriero for him based on the way he played last night. If in a few games he runs out of gas or loses his edge, that's fine, but to say Arnott is definitely an upgrade over him at this point when Arnott is 38, at the tail end of a career, and wasn't signed by anyone until yesterday, is to speak too soon.

Yeah, exactly.

I mean in general I'm not a fan of bringing in older players and hoping they catch the lightning in a bottle one more time before the career is over, but as long as Arnott isn't being counted on saving the season or anything, it's ok as a signing. Injuries will likely also happen at some point.

Looked at another way, 17 goals is 54% more offense than 11 goals, which is significantly more.

Personally, I think both Arnott and Ferriero are needed in the lineup and if it means scratching 2 of Rupp/Halpern/Asham once Kreider is going, so be it. Assuming, of course, that Arnott is effective and Ferriero consistently plays like he did last night.

It may work out and it may not. Time will tell. Arnott could be another version of Vinny Prospal. Legs are kind of gone but has the savvy. Good on the pwp. Has some size and nastiness--though he's no fighter. He fits into the cap without creating a huge problem. He's also connected to the GM going back into his Edmonton days--over the years there's been a few times that's he's been rumored to be going to the Rangers. I don't see this as being anything but a short term fix.

At this point, I'd say that's a plus. If he replaces Rupp in the lineup it means one less meaningless, momentum killing, stupid ********** fight loss

He is certainly a better option on the powerplay, but his even strength production was right on line with Boyle's last season despite havibng some of the most sheltered minutes in the league.

This is a great signing. Well worth a shot. Veteran leadership will be huge for our younger players. Still has some jam in his game. And if he is feeling his oats some days, he could win us a game or 2. Loved him as a player in his prime. Allstar, first line center, won the Cup for the Devils with his shot. If he has anything left in the tank, he can help us in so many situations, PP, PK, Faceoffs, mentoring, leadership, playoff experience, flexibility in line shuffling.

IT'S A WIN WIN SIGNING.

i like the signing. i don't think the rangers need more energy or grit. i think they just need some time to gel and get their legs. i do think the team needs a bit more depth and a guy who can win faceoffs. arnott seems to be a reasonable solution. a team looking to go far in the playoffs will always need depth.

I'm excited to see if he could bring something to the Rangers. Even winning key faceoffs would suffice. Only a year, can't hurt.

Im pretty much convinced that Arnott will not spend most of his time at center. The Rangers' speed down the middle is already a concern, Arnott would just add to that problem - and its not an ideal fit considering what this team's 3rd line center role entails

Regardless, its another body for the bottom 6, so thats alright with me.

There are some players that you've hated their whole careers and never want to see in a Ranger uniform like Brashear. Arnott is one for me.

So when is he considered "officially" signed? When's his physical?

Could be he is, but that won't fly here. And anyone who pays attention to the game at all will know that. Arnott is bound to know what is expected of a NY Ranger and he's got a couple of good reasons to get with the program:

- If he works hard and plays well he could have a shot at another cup
- If he wants to sign somewhere next year, he needs to do well. He won't get to do that from the doghouse or the AHL.
- If he plans to retire he's likely to want to protect his legacy.

The way I see it, it all comes down to A: Can he contribute and B: Will Torts let him get away with anything? I'm pretty sure A is a yes and I'm 100% sure that B is a no.

I like this signing and was expecting something like this. This adds to the depth and pushes everyone to give it their all, at all times. Nothing wrong with a little competion...

I've never really heard anything about that. What has Arnott done in the past (other than being a successful player for the Devils )?

We have him listed here as 1 year/1.6m.

The main boards list it as 1 year/1.7m.

Which is right?

Capgeek has it as $1.6MM, but they didn't confirm it yet.

TSN has it as "somewhere between $1.6-$1.7 million". Hope that clears things up.

I don't see what more Arnott needs to prove in his career. He's won a SC, scored the game winning cup goal, is a multiple all-star, former captain and made a ton of dough in his career. I don't think he'll be that motivated, but it's just my baseless speculation.

He had a problem with Hitchcock last year and he wanted more ice time based on his passed pedigree when he clearly shouldn't overlap talent like Perron, Oshie, Backes and Berglund. The same thing happened in Nashville where he wanted a bigger role and was also presumed as a locker room cancer, hence the trade to New Jersey. There were also noted off-ice issues with Edmonton and was traded to New Jersey where his career turned around.
