Correct, and anyone who doubts this should look at how badly the Yankees offense struggled without A-Rod last season. Just because he's declining and is signed to the worst contract in baseball doesn't mean that the Yankees don't need him.

The only possible silver lining to this news is that it might convince a better infielder (like Scutaro or Drew) to sign with New York, knowing that they will get a ton of at bats with A-Rod and Jeter hurt to start the year/spending a lot of time at DH once they're back.

The Yankees are insured on Alex Rodriguez's $275-million contract, and could receive 75-80 to percent of the remaining monies if he's unable to play it out, sources said.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says it's possible third baseman Alex Rodriguez could miss the entire season while recovering from hip surgery.

Cashman says ''there's no guarantees in this stuff'' that Rodriguez will be able to play this year.

The 37-year-old Rodriguez had surgery on his left hip last week. The team said the rehabilitation time was expected to be six months, which would sideline the star slugger until the All-Star break.
